Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions about file indexing and search and figured this is the right place to ask. Using the KDE 4.2 beta2 for almost a week now everything seems to work fine. Almost no crashes and prettier than before. During this time I tried to find some information on strigi and nepomuk. It seems to be configured and running but how can I "really" configure and use it? File indexing starts after I log in but it stops after a while (not more than 5min). That means I have now ~1100 files in the index. Is that supposed to be like that? It will take forever to index my entire home folder. My second question is, how can I use the file index. There is no search field except krunner, which is nice, but I would prefer additional information like I have in the application recall. There are also many zombie processes (pdftotext) after indexing that I can't kill. PDF indexing is the most important feature I would like to use. Maybe these zombie processes are the reason for strigi to stop indexing? There seems to be a bug report on that so that I didn't file a new one. Thanks, david

Strigi indexing is not really useful actually but you can try tagging and scoring using dolphin or gwenview. I write one example in
nepomuk-convince-m ... l#pid25511

Thanks for your answers.
This is interesting, now the nepomuksearch works. A couple of days ago dolphin complained that there is no kio slave. Is there a way to start the indexing manually? As I wrote before, it only scans after login. I used tagging before but usually I don't remember my tags. It would be useful to have some kind of tag cloud somewhere. The search works when I search for "pdf" (shows all files ending with pdf) but not when I type text that is in the pdf file. Textfiles work though. I would like to help debugging this because I really need the fulltext search in pdf-files. What is the best way to start? I am very certain that this is related to the pdftotext zombies. Cause recall full text search uses the same program and works fine here. Thanks again and have a nice Christmas! David

Search indexing work good here.
Assuming Strigi service is already running, make sure you have "/" selected in KMenu -> System Settings -> Desktop Search -> Advanced Settings. |

I have my home directory selected. But that doesn't change the problem.
