I am making a Gentoo stage that includes KDE 3.5.9 and I would like to set a certain look for all the default user's desktop.
How do you set system-wide settings like that?

You could just edit /etc/kde3/ to include the needed settings. There should be a config file there for most applications. Alternately you could use Kiosk and nominate to allow them to make changes.

That directory does not exist.

Does /etc/kde3rc exist? If it does, try using profileDirsPrefix. note that the directory specified might not exist unless you have installed + run Kiosk.

No directories for kde seem to exist at all in the /etc dir.

Did you install KDE 3 to a certain prefix? If so, try searching under there. ( $KDEDIR/etc/ )

I installed KDE 3.5.9 on gentoo via: emerge kde-meta (which gives all packages for KDE) Can you elaborate on this $KDEDIR? Right now there are no users but root made on the stage. Root has a kdesktoprc file at: /root/.kde3.5/share/config/kdektoprc That is the only kdektoprc file on the system. Would making an /etc/kde/ directory and putting that file in it work?

Also try looking in /usr/kde//share/config or /usr/share/kde3/config or /usr/share/kde/config

This is what is in /usr/kde/3.5/share/config: localhost stage4 # cd /usr/kde/3.5/share/config localhost config # ls colors kdebugrc klettresrc ksircrc kxkb_groups compizrc kdeprintrc klipperrc ksslcalist language.codes ipv6blacklist kdesktop_custom_menu1 kmail.antispamrc kstarsrc libkleopatrarc katefiletyperc kdesktop_custom_menu2 kmail.antivirusrc ktalkdrc magic katerc kdm konqsidebartng.rc kthemestylerc translaterc katesyntaxhighlightingrc khangmanrc kshorturifilterrc kvoctrainrc ui kdebug.areas khotnewstuffrc ksim_panelextensionrc kwordquizrc localhost config #[hr] I just tried the kiosk too but I created a new userid and logged on and it gave me the setup wizard. I quit the wizard and the desktop is still the default desktop.

So in Kiosk you created a profile, applied some settings to a profile, and placed the new user in that profile? It will not work unless the profile is applied to the user concerned.
