I have Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) on my computer. To put this in perspective. I have Kubuntu (which is what I am on right now), KDE4.1 and KDE 4.2 installed. 4.1 is a living hell for me. Never works right. Lost my lower menu bar and could NEVER get it back. Put KDE4.2 on and it works much better. But there are still some glitches to it. The way I installed it was to take the nightly NEON build repo for 8.10 and change it from Intrepid to Hardy. Worked like a charm too.

I have found that for some reason that 4.2 does not like to keep my settings right. Sometimes when I boot up, i get the KDE 3.5 settings and at other times I get Ubuntu settings. Like windows borders. Also I can not reset my themes to anything other than stock (trying to get a darker theme). For instance.....KDE3.5 I can not set it to more the 2 desktops, but I can with ubuntu. When the settings get mixed up KDE4.2 reflects this.

Also...........Kopete in KDE4.2 can not longer set a default image. It can not send files as easy too.

My desk top settings are not saving either.

Any info on what is going on?


Also another biggie. If I leave my computer and come back to it with KDE4.1 or 4.2 it will lock the screen. NONE of my passwords work to unlock it. How do I configure this to stop happening or to set a password?

With KDE 4.2 not being able to unlock it is probably because krunner_lock does not have the needed permissions to perform user authentication ( through PAM, etc ). This is how my user installed self compiled 4.2 install behaves as well.

Solution: switch to Virtual Terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + F2 ) login, and "kill krunner_lock. You can use Ctrl + Alt + F7 to return to your user session.

No idea what is happening with regard to forgetting the settings. Try setting the KDEHOME variable in a KDE 4.2 only user and using that for evaluating 4.2. I use seperate users for each desktop environment ( 4.1 and 4.2 for instance )

With desktop settings not saving, Plasma is probably silently crashing. Try deleting plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc in ~/.kde/share/config
