I have an Nvidia HDTV card and have a computer dedicated to the TV. The problem I am having comes from the Nvidia driver making the desktop a little bigger then the screen image. The result is the desktop is "clipped" on all for sides. It's clipped about half the height of the bottom panel. It's impossible to change this inside xorg.conf as the driver uses it's internal mode lines. So I suspect the only way to "fix" the problem is to put a border around the desktop. Would this be possible with a theme? Or is there a better way?

If you go to any of the sites that are for TV hookups you see everybody has this problem. When I play a movie on my wide screen tv the edges are clipped but not the top and bottom so it's watchable. Hulu.com works fine when in full screen mode but is hard to navigate when in regular mode. So I was wondering ho can I get borders around the edges of the desktop?

This might not be the correct place for this question but I suspect it does fall under "Configuration."

As far as I am aware, Plasma, etc will use as much space as X claims to be able to provide on screen. Therefore this issue needs to be reported to the developers of your Graphics card drivers ( NVidia in this case ).

Upgrading to a newer version of the drivers, as advised in a thread devoted to KDE 4 issues on NVidia is highly recommended to resolve performance issues.

Nvidia is aware of the problem. But they are not breaking any speed records fixing it. I am using the latest version of the Nvidia driver. Making changes in xorg.conf are not used by the Nvidia drive for TV output. They have their own internal information. Unfortunately that internal information is wrong.

This problem is repeated over and over on the nvidia forum.

I suspect a way to solve the problem is to create a border around the screen that is about the same size as what is cropped. Then it's just the border that is clipped and the desktop will appear to be normal. But how to go about doing this is beyond me at the moment.

To add a border around a screen you will need to code it directly into the X server as it's the only single point that all applications get their screen data from. If you want to do it any higher than that you will need to edit a large (LARGE) amount of toolkits and applications to do it consistently.

Have fun with that, it will be faster just to wait for nVidia. =

Do you know any good books or links for hacking X? It's not outside of my skill set but I haven't been paid for witting code in about fifteen years so I am a little out of date.
