KDE Questions

Thu Jan 01, 2009 6:57 am
I used Ubuntu and GNOME for about three weeks before I said I didn't like GNOME. Not enough tinker ability. So, I have several questions about KDE, about different things.

1) Adept does not have anything under the "View" menu. Should it be this way? I'd like ti filter the applications I have installed and not installed.

2) For the panels you can create, how can I move things around better? Let me show you...

Ok, that panel on the bottom. See how it has that junk in the middle? That is the only place it can go. It has invisible space (until you start to drag it, which is the grey) that takes up ALL that blank area. Is there some way to fix that? Also, I want to have that, and a few other icons, on the right side while the Quick Access and Application Launcher stay on the left. I've tried aligning it under the panel options, but it doesn't do anything.

3) How can I get the bottom panel to display windows I have open, like GNOME/Windows can?

4) Konquerer is pretty amazing. That's not a question.

It appears you are missing some of the default plasmoids. The windows you have got open are displayed by the "Task Manager" plasmoid. The default clock is provided by "Digital Clock". The area to switch between your virtual desktops is the "Pager" plasmoid.

As you add plasmoids in the order you wish, the huge amount of space will disappear, particularly when you add the Task Manager plasmoid.

1. What's your distro? I do have entries under "View" in adept. Maybe that's a distro specific patch.

To filter installed/uninstalled packages, see the icons here next to "State"?

^^^ Now if you click on the blue square (leftmost) -- which indicates "not installed packges", that would fade it out and only installed packages will be listed.

2 & 3. You will get rid of the blank space if you add the Task Manager plasmoid.

bcooksley - Adding the Task Manager fixed any gripes I had with the bar. Thanks.

LinuxIsInnovation - I'm using Kubuntu 8.10, 64-bit.

Does filtering work for you?
Plus, that is strange (View menu). Can you produce a screenshot?
This might be a valid bug as well (as I presently am on a 32-bit installation, it's hard for me to tell if the 64-bit one has this missing -- which it shouldn't normally)

When I posted the OP I was running Kubuntu, but I swapped back to Ubuntu. Still, even on a LiveCD, there is no view menu. You click it and it just makes a tiny dot where the menu should be, like it's empty. This happened to me with installed 64-bit, and LiveCD 32 AND 64 bit.

EDIT: I reinstalled Kubuntu (it's not a big deal, this computer is for messing around anywya) and still not View menu. Running 32-bit. Here is a screenshot...

I have the View menu selected and get nothing.

DOUBLE EDIT: Well that's weird. It all works now. Alright then.

TRIPLE EDIT: Ok, this is weird now. I had a View menu and the filtering worked, but after I restarted my computer it went back to the way it was, but it is all still filtered correctly.

Ok, I can confirm this with Adept Installer (earlier, I took a quick look at Adept Manager).

Looks like a bug. Please forward (and add a link here) to http://bugs.kde.org
Thanks in advance.
