Why the hell do you people keep trying to stop me logging in as the root user .?
I want to log in as root . If you want me to use your software you will stop hiding the allow root logins variable. It was in /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc............where is it now? Give us a place to make it so if we want it . I don't understand the logic of not giving a user the right to choose and it WILL lose you patronage. I'm getting bloody sick of it ! The thought occurred to me that maybe it is Mandriva interfering with it . If it is tell me please and I will take it to them.

This is because the X-window system is not designed for run as root user and may cause problems in X.
Most command-line tools are designed for any user and works great since thouroughly tested under root. However, most gui-based programs are not tested under root and the designers just want to keep you from using an untested environment. Yes you may argue you have no problem running X as root, but I say it is not tested and you should use as your own risk. |

Try checking under /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc if you are using KDE 4.

Thanks , thats where I went first , done it before. Now it seems to be put into the mozilla file at /var/lib/mandriva/kde4-profiles/common/share/config/kdm/kdmrc not sure if it can be changed there. Im still working on how to save the edited config file kdmrc without being root and with some of the usual text editors just not there on my distro . Thats why I need to be root , to look around and see what is there and fix the errors that are always there in Mandriva releases Edit::- Tools->System Tools->FileManager Super User Mode-.>Open above file with Kedit ,change Allow Root Logins to True did the trick Whoever put the reputation down 1 might now consider putting it back up 1 not that I give a ****.. Your reputation comes from Good Service and is spread by word of mouth. Had 40 years experience at that. This post is to let those people who make these silly absolute decisions to allow users to make their own choice and this seem like the only place I can reach them!

If it is fixed, please add a [SOLVED] to the subject of your initial post.

The different location for configuration files was the fault of Mandriva customisations of KDE. Please forward complaints to them about the changing of configuration file locations ( which also makes it harder for us to support users ironically )
