i have both kde 4.2 and 3.5 on linux (same happened with 4.1 too)
kde 4 is in /usr/ kde 3 is in /opt/kde/ for some reason kde 3 looks into the kde 4 system files instead of his own. this results in stuff like half the options (like location bar and most buttons in konqueror) disappear from toolbars in most applications menus change or break (like in kolorpaint 3 few menus disappeared and one previously invisible (titled DO NOT TRANSLATE) appeared with the paint tools inside all those breaks are fixed when i delete certain files from the kde 4 system folders (but that breaks kde 4 apps) k menu in kde 3 is empty (happened after upgrade to 4.2 only) how can i make kde 3 ignore kde 4 and look in its own folders in /opt/ first ? |

It might be that KDEDIRS is not set or not set correctly (e.g. containing the other prefix first)
See http://techbase.kde.org/KDE_System_Admi ... es#KDEDIRS Cheers, _

Unusual. Try making sure $PATH is set properly and use seperate $KDEHOME for each ( .kde for KDE 3, .kde4 for KDE 4 ) Make sure that $KDEDIRS is not being reset by the KDE 3 startkde script.

It shouldn't ideally. You can add the path line to your ~/.bashrc as well.
