Hello,

I'm using Konqueror Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3).

I am using the "Icon" View Mode hoping to be able to see thumbnails of files like .avi, .mpg, .wmv, and other video files.

Unfortunately my experience has been that running Konqueror under KDE 4.1 the best I can get is a thumbnail preview for images only.

So, I looked in the Konqueror help file to try to fix this. But, when I follow the Konqueror instructions to view thumbnails it doesn't work exactly as written in the instructions.

Konqueror says that if I want to have "File Previews" that I need to select "View->Preview" from the Menubar which will bring up a sub menu that lets you enable file previews for certain types of file.
But, when I select "View->Preview" from the Menubar there is no sub menu that lets me enable file previews for certain types of files. The only available choice I have is to either select "Preview" or deselect "Preview".

In KDE 3.5 I was able to configure Konqueror to support thumbnail preview of images and movie files.
Now, in KDE 4.1 I don't know how to configure Konqueror to support thumbnail preview of movie files.

If someone can tell me how or give me a link that would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

You don't say which distro you're using, but use adept/zypper or whatever to see if there's a package called mplayerthumbs or something similar (in OpenSUSE 11.1, it's called kde4-mplayerthumbs, and available from the packman repository).

If it's not, you can find the source code at http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.ph ... tent=41180

Note though, in my experience at least, it works better with KDE 4.2 rather than the 4.1.x series. Your mileage may vary.

I'm using Fedora 10... and just did a search for mplayerthumbs but didn't find it... I think I'll wait for 4.2. And it looks like Fedora 10 only has 4.1.

I did try to install it from www.kde-apps.org. Thanks for the link. I got the error below and have no idea what to do about it. Unless someone has a quick and easy suggestion I will just wait until KDE 4.2 rolls around.

Error:
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$KDEDIR -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release /tmp/mplayer-thumbs-build/src/
CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:8 (kde4_add_kcfg_files):
Unknown CMake command "kde4_add_kcfg_files".

CMake Warning (dev) in CMakeLists.txt:
No cmake_minimum_required command is present. A line of code such as

cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.6)

should be added at the top of the file. The version specified may be lower
if you wish to support older CMake versions for this project. For more
information run "cmake --help-policy CMP0000".
This warning is for project developers. Use -Wno-dev to suppress it.

-- Configuring incomplete, errors occurred!

So, with that error I think I will wait until Fedora 10 comes out with KDE 4.2 or I'll jump ship to another distro and play with 4.2. For what it's worth Fedora 10 is awesome... just wish I could use one of it's file managers to view thumbnails of video file types.

Again, thanks for your help!

You are missing the KDE development files. These are usually contained in *-devel or *-dev packages. You will need at a minimum, libs, and probably base as well.

I installed every KDE libs I could find like the Runtime libraries for kdebase.
I also installed many *-devel or *-dev I could find.
But, I can still only view thumbnails of image files.

I think I'll wait until Jan 27 when KDE 4.2 is released.

Thanks again for all of your help. It's very much appreciated.

Just an update...
I switched to openSUSE and installed KDE 3.5.10.
And, after installing mplayerthumbs the thumbnail preview is working fine.

Thanks again for your help!

If this issue has been resolved, could you please add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread title? Thanks in advance.

This fixed a problem I was having with avi preview in digikam 0.9.4. Hasn't worked in konqueror though, odd.

Hi Steve,

Just curious. Do you have "libarts1-xine" installed? I think that may help in showing thumbnails in KDE 3.5.

Maybe search for that file to install or some KDE multimedia modules... like 'kdemultimedia' or "kdemultimedia3-arts"... the names of the modules may be different in the distros... I'm not suggesting this is the fix I'm only letting you know what I would try.

I'm using KDE 4.1.something, will have a look, thanks.

Hello,

Mr Stupid here :-(

The problem was I was using Digikam for kde3, so installing mplayerthumbs worked for that. However, konqueror is for kde4 in opensuse 11.1 so I needed to install kde4-mplayerthumbs. avi previews in konqueror and dolphin work a treat.

glad you solved it! And, I made a note for myself to install kde4-mplayerthumbs for openSUSE, thanks!
Personally, I think it should be a default in all distros so users don't have to search for this feature.
