[SOLVED]Deselecting "display window contents while resizing" causes display to blank.
Mon Jan 12, 2009 5:14 pm
I am trying to set up KDE on a Fedora 10 system.
From a fresh install of KDE, I changed very few settings, and nothing else display related, before running in to this problem. When I turned off "display window contents while resizing" and applied the change, the display went completely white except for the mouse pointer and an outline of the window border, so I can't see where to restore the setting. Futhermore, logging out and back in results in the splash screen being shown and then the display goes black except for the mouse pointer. In this state, KDE is completely unusable. I've grepped my .kde directory for 'window', 'display', and 'content' hoping to find a config file where I could restore the setting, but so far I haven't found anything. I would appreciate help with any way to fix this problem. If anyone knows how I can change the setting from a console, that would help, or if anyone has any ideas about what would cause the problem.

I think the affected file is ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc (or .kde instead of .kde4).

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to entry to tty1, and login. Then edit the file in nano or vim editor:
Find and replace ResizeMode=Transparent (under category [Windows]) and change it to ResizeMode=Opaque. EDIT: Wow, guess Hans beat me on that A cup of coffee gives you a new reply!

Thanks to both of you. I should have tried searching for resize. But that didn't fix the problem. I still get a blank screen when logging in to KDE. The only other settings I can recall changing prior to that were the smiley theme, splash screen selection, and launcher feedback time.

Your system may be incompatible with 3D effects or otherwise not like them. Change the entry Enabled to false under the [Compositing] section in the same configuration file ( kwinrc )

Thanks to bcooksley. Changing the compositing setting fixed the problem, and the window resizing/moving settings now work correctly. I'm not sure how the compositing settings got turned on, as I definitely was not changing that when the problem cropped up. I have not been able to reproduce the bug.
