Good evenening - well 00:45 here!
I have just added KDE to my Fedora 9 installation. All was fine until I tried going round the themes & wallpapers.... Now, when I logon, I just get a black screen with (sometimes) random Large grey or white rectangles.... then an automatic reboot. If I logon as root, all is still fine. Any ideas where something like a "user profile" is & how I can reset it to the default? Do I need to try & delete any of the installed "goodies"??? Many thanks Dave |

The KDE 4 user profile is normally located at ~/.kde4
KDE Sysadmin

I think your problem might be related to compositing and faulty video drivers (most likely 3d acceleration). Do you have desktop effects enabled for Kwin?
You can manually alter your settings by editting .kde4/share/config/kwinrc. One of the first items you'll see when editting that file is called "[Compositing]", set "Enabled" to false to disable compositing.

Thanks! Took a bit of finding - somehow my Fedora setup doesn't have a .kde4 folder, just a .kde, but knocking out the "compositing" and a couple of other options I remembered setting got me back working again!!!!!!:-) As I've never tried KDE before.... I presume the little bouncy thingy near my cursor is a "plasmoid"? And what (briefly!) is the difference between a "Plasmoid" & a "widget"?? Again, many thanks Dave |
