Hello,
I install Fedora 10 on my computer first time, today. Running the KDE 4.1.2 be my X-window environment manager. While I use the automatic update, I set the some item (I didn't remember what item.)... then the screen turn to the full black. My GPU is NVIDA GeForce 7300GT. I didn't think the video card will crash the X-window, because when I finished the installation I log in/out several time and never crash it. After then, I enter the terminator mode (tty2~6) to start the X-window. But I got the warning below and didn't start the X-window: Fatal server is already active for display 0, If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 Keygiving up. Xinit : Resource temporarily unavailable (errno 11) : unable to connect to X server. Xinit : No such process (errno 3) : Server error. Frist way, I try to remove these files -- /tmp/.X0-lock; /tmp/kxocket-USER; /tmp/kde-USER; ~/.kde/tmp-hostname. Then I reboot my computer, I got the same isuue and warning. Second way, I use rpm packages -- arts, kdelibs and kdebase to reinstall on the system but it didn't work. I want to recover my X-window as normal, didn't by reinstalling my O.S. Please, give me some other way to fix this issue. Thanks!! |

You likely tried to activate KWin Desktop Effects. they can be disabled by editing the file $KDEHOME/share/config/kwinrc. Go to the section "[Compositing]" and find "Enabled" set it to "false"
You should then be able to login at KDM/GDM.

Hi,
I try to find the "kwinrc" file. It's not in this directory -- $KDEHOME/share/config/. I found it in this path -- /usr/share/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/share/config/kwinrc. But I can't find the section "[Compositing]" in this file. My "kwinrc" file content was : [Style] PluginLib=kwin3_oxygen ShowToolTips=true [Windows] AutoRaise=off AutoRaiseInterval=0 BorderSnapZone=10 ClickRaise=on FocusPolicy=ClickToFocus MoveMode=Opaque ResizeMode=Opaque WindowSnapZone=10 WindowsPlacement=Smart And I can login at KDM/GDM, only when I login KDM, the screen it will turn to black. Thank you for your helps. |

Try looking in ~/.kde4/share/config or ~/.kde/share/config
