I know that this is more of a distro problem, but Kubuntu forums are unavailable at this moment, so I'm more or less lost in what to do.
After the last update that included a Linux-image-something-something... I lost my desktop effects. I knew this was a possibility of this happening as I installed a Nvidia 188.22 driver and compiled by hand a linux-restricted-modules. So I guess this update had to overwritten the custom nvida restricted-module.
So what do I do? Do I have to reinstall nvida driver or what??

And if there is any Debian / Ubuntu user that knows how to withheld some of updates.
I like to be on bleeding edge, but I would like to prevent this from happening so I would withheld any restricted-modules update that might breake this.
I know (in theory) how this is done in Arch, but have no idea how to do it in Kubuntu.

Thanks (in advance) for the help![hr]
LOL, just after I posted this Kubuntu forums became available...

The 180.22 driver is in the official repository now.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180

Should fix your problem

Nope it didn't unfortunately.
I get this error when I try to enable effects:
Code: Select all
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

Sometimes I can enable effects without the error, but effects still don't work...
I have no idea what went wrong...

Oh and it doesn't work to change to Xrandr it still dosen't work...
(And just yesterday I was saying how nicely all the effects work on my computer... :( )

After few misconfigurations and such I decided to reinstall the 188.22 driver that I
downloaded from the nVida site. And it works!
So this is solved, but still can someone tell me how to hold back some updates that could break this again.
