Hi
Im having Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit on a PC. Now all of a sudden I cant seem to login. After entering the username & password, it shows the loading KDE 4.1 splash page - after it shows the first icon, it sort of restarts X and goes back to the login screen back again ! I did try updating to KDE 4.2 yesterday but that doesnt seem to have happened fully I guess. I can login using console but what am I supposed to edit to get back login using GUI ? Tried startx - a blank screen shows up with te mouse cursor and then back to console.

You have two issues preventing KDE startup:
1) Your KDE Libraries installation appears to be damaged ( error loading shared libraries: libplasma.so.3: no such file ) 2) You appear to be trying to use your normal environment when logging in as root ( Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-anjanesh" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0. )

These commands should suffice, assuming your repository configuration isn't broken:

Hello, I have pretty much the same problem, but in Mandriva 2009, had some problems before when trying to update the packages, but worked fine until today, does the same thing, tries to go, and then goes back to the login screen. is there something like dpkg Repair in mandriva?? thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Which KDE Version do you use or want to use (KDE 4.1, 4.2.0 or 4.2.1)?
Can you explain the problem in your own words? Regards, TeaAge

Hello, thanks for the quick response, I'm using KDE 4.1, the one that came with the distro, it was working fine, but this morning I tried to enter and normally it goes to the desktop right away, this time it showed the logon screen with the user names, so tried to enter my account, but as soon as a click in "login" screen turns off for about 1 second, then goes back to the logon screen. same thing happens with all the accounts, and even when trying fail safe mode. this happened about 1 week ago, but I decided to format the partition and reinstall. I don't think there has to be a fix for it, I don't want to format again..
thanks in advance

Maybe an important package for KDE is missing.
Try to install
This will check all needed dependencies for KDE 4. If this doesn't help, start Mandriva in Failsave and start KDE manually with
If it fails, what error messages are displayed? Maybe have a look at ~/.xsession-errors in your users home-folder. Regards, TeaAge

Hello, I got some news on this problem: when I got home I logged into failsafe, then tried
urpmi task-kde4-minimal however, there's something wrong with the mandriva mirrors, because it failed with a message saying something about "aria 2 failed, returned with 1"; so tried to startkde, but it failed because display0 wasn't configured or something like that. The weird part is that after it rebooted, and logged fine to 3 out of the 4 accounts on the system, KDE 4 and everything, so tried to change the mirrors list to use the ones on kernel.org, then did again "urpmi task-kde4-minimal" and it returned fine, so tried to log in console mode to the problematic account, but had message "/var/lib/misc/group.db no such file or directory". restarted the system once again and everything worked fine, the 4 accounts. I don't know what happened, but it's working just fine now! any idea on what could happen?

Very weird.
In failsave you have no network, that's why you get the urpmi error. That's all I can say you Regards, TeaAge

well, the importan thing is that it works fine now... even though it was very strange.. I also have another problem, but I'm not sure if should start a new thread.. I noticed this a while ago, since using KDE 3.x, and now in KDE 4, after some hours using the system, specially konqueror, hdd led on my system goes crazy, and it gets really slow, I have to reboot the system. it happened before on a laptop, and now on a desktop, but it's the same thing. the only thing I remember using when it happens is konqueror. could it be a setting on it?
thanks for any suggestion.
