Hi
I have one question about system tray..will it be improved in next release of kde 4.2.x (1)? I find out that works very slow and refreshing is slow, somewhile icons are covering, for example kmix show mute and volume up (green circle) together and I need to click on arrow hide/show to refresh it, and amarok icon and kmix are covering in some cases. I think to attract people using kde 4 you need to improve to highest level system tray, because at first look if you see your system tray is not working as should you start doubt in stability. This is my opinion. Regards |

The system tray is what it is mostly due to a. a **** FD.O specification, b. GTK+ bugs that the GTK+ developers do not want to fix. For KDE 4.3 there's hope on seeing a new systray specification which will address some of these issues.

Isn't Qt 4.5 supposed to fix some of the rendering artifacts? I think I read it somewhere here in the forums.

Yes, there are several patches in Qt 4.5 that will fix the systray background corruption.

and kde is already updating to qt 4.5 or this will be all done in kde 4.3? As far as I know qt 4.5 integrates or support webkit too - that's mean that konqueror will be using it, now in kde 4.2 it still depends on khtml, or doesn't?

Updating to Qt 4.5 is really a distribution-related thing. (Though KDE 4.3 will officially be based on Qt 4.5, so all distros will have to upgrade to Qt 4.5 before that.)
Qt has supported WebKit since Qt 4.4. Most likely KDE will still use KHTML as a default backend, but many distros are considering using the WebKit KPart for Konqueror by default. |

yea, qt 4.5 brings improvement in performance and netscape plugins since 4.4 so, after that I suppose kubuntu 9.04 will have better systray (updated to qt 4.5) - that's good news  |

I am using qt4.5 at the moment, and there are no rendering issues with kde4 apps in the systray, even with a transparent background (yeah!). I haven't tried with gtk apps (don't use any), but kde3 icons still have rendering issues.

I would not expect that kubuntu 9.04 will be shipped with Qt 4.5. It will contain the new KDE 4.2 which is based on Qt 4.4 (though I heard it can be run with Qt 4.5). Nevertheless, when there are the first betas and release candidates for KDE 4.3 in may or june, there should be some packages in experimental repositories. Correct me if I am wrong. It's still up in the air whether or not Kubuntu will include Qt 4.5. Testing still needs to be done.
