Hello.

I build KDE 4.2.0 from official Gentoo portage tree. If I try to login to KDE under user - I see black & white squares, but no KDE :)
If I login to KDE as root - KDE work fine.

Ok, I remove KDE from system and rebuild it from overlay kde-testing - version 4.2.61.. Nothing change.

Clearing .kde4, .config and kdecache did not effect. Creating clear new user (for test) too.

System: Gentoo 2008.0
KDE: 4.2.0, 4.2.61
Video drivers: NVIDIA official 180.18.

Are you able to open Konsole? If you can try running these commands & reporting their output here ( in particular plasma & ):
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma
rm -rf $KDEHOME/share/config/plasm*
plasma &

I think you mistook $KDEHOME for $KDEDIR. $KDEHOME exists under your $HOME directory ( ~/.kde4 usually )

The permissions on a font directory are incorrect ( see first message in error log ). You are also missing kdedglobalaccel and kephald, as well as KNotify4. These are critical processes to a fully functioning KDE 4 environment ( Global Shortcuts + Multi Screen + Notifications )

Please check the permissions throughout /usr/share/ to ensure that your normal user can read them.

I fix persissions to /usr/share/kde4, but nothing changes.

Package kdedglobalaccel installed, kephald does not exist in tree.

KNotify4 exist in system.

Kephald is part of KDE Base - Workspace I believe. Is the startup log exactly the same?

I found error - permissions in /usr/share/kde4/services/*. I fix it.

Next problem:

Plasma started, KDE works, tray, taskbar and clocks is missing - only free desktop.

Those would be all Plasmoids. Try checking /usr/lib/kde4/* and /usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/*
