[SOLVED] Desktop effects don't work

Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:53 pm
Hi
For two days I am trying to somehow get desktop effects to work, but still without success.
I am using KDE 4.2 on Gentoo, with radeon driver and working DRI, with glxgears I get around 1800FPS.
Sometimes when I enable desktop effects I get blue screen for a few seconds and then picture becoms normal and effects are disabled, for most of the time I only get this message when trying to enable them:
Code: Select all
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

I have tried different options in advanced but everytime it is the same. Any ideas what is wrong? If you need more information just ask.

Is "Composite" mentioned anywhere in xorg.conf?

[SOLVED] Desktop effects don't work

Yes, without next line it was imposible to switch between enable/disable.
Code: Select all
Section "Extensions"
        Option      "Composite" "1"
EndSection

Edit: It is working! I somehow got working dri on fglrx drivers and I could enable effects. So the problem are the drivers. Opengl is xorg-x11, not Ati.

[SOLVED] Desktop effects don't work

Well I thought it is solved, but there is still a problem. I can enable effects, but when I change options they just stop working despite they are enabled. If I disable and enable them again there is again that message posted in first post. When I restart X I can enable them again.

Edit: OK now it is ok, you just have to find rigth combination of drivers. fglrx & ati openGL and it is working.

I don't want to open new topic for every problem so I'll just ask some questions regarding effects here.
Some effects doesn't work. For example explosion when closing window doesn't work, but fall appart works. Also I can't get magnifier or looking glass to work.
