OK so i opened konqueror and resized it just the way i like it and placed where i like it and then i closed it and opened it up again and it appeared in the default position (left top corner) and default size.. :( That's annoying. maybe i just don't know where to choose it to save the position and size..

Which Window Manager are you both using? KWin or Compiz?

Try changing the Placement setting in System Settings > Window Behaviour > Window Behaviour > Advanced.

Thanks Booksley This solved my issue.

I upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10. I like the new look and feel. However everytime a new window opens, it is always maximized -- which is annoying for IM chat windows and spell-checker windows.

So, under the advanced, I changed "Smart" to "Centered", now those windows appear in their original size in the middle of the screen.

Thanks again.

I found the actual answer to the original question here for KWin: http://userbase.kde.org/KWin#You_want_an_application_to_launch_in_a_specific_size_and_position_every_time, and decided to repost it here for the sake of others who found this thread first.

Position the window where you want it to open, then right-click on the title-bar, choosing Advanced -> Special Window Settings. This will open a settings window, with appropriate entries already made. All you need to do now is select the Geometry tab and check Position and Size.

What is the command-line alternative to set this? My .files regularly get wiped or ignored due to the netboot setup at work, I'm not a sudoer, and I am having trouble scripting window location settings. If I could force particular window locations, that would be ideal. I don't need to be able to move them if they're in the right place.
I have a sense that qdbus can be used to set window locations on-the-fly, but I'm not familiar with its usage, and would appreciate some guidance.

The command "wmctrl" should be used to alter the size and position of windows currently open on your system.

I'm having a similar problem also with Firefox in KDE 4.6.4 - aptosid. I can go to Advanced>Special Application Settings>Geometry, and check Remember Position. Problem is, it doesn't.

Would some kind soul point out the configuration file this setting is actually supposed to save into? I'm guessing a permissions problem but I don't know where to start looking.

I have the same problem. Does this work for some people and not others? It seems like a very basic problem, saving the size and position of applications.

I've tried "smart" and moved to "centred" in Advanced Window Behaviour, because clearly it was more or less random to begin with.

When I select the "remembered" option for individual applications it doesn't work. I've moved to applying a certain location to begin with but it's not what I actually want.

I've had a look around and this seems to be the main thread where people talk about the problem. Are there any solutions? Is this a rare bug? Do most people not care?

Thanks

There is a long standing bug for globally remembering window positions & sizes.

I asked Martin (main developer of kwin) on IRC about this feature and he responded:

"In general we ignore feature requests.
We have our own roadmap which does not align with user wishes.
If a user wishes for something like that he has to contribute.
Feel free to provide them this link http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/bugfixing-service "
