Hi,

I'm on openSUSE 11.0 and yesterday installed an update of KDE 4.2 (release 102). However, ever since then, I randomly get total black screen when starting an application. It happens very random and unpredictable. When I get the black screen, all I see is the mouse pointer and nothing else. It seems that applications still respond as even though I can see nothing, I know where my logout button is and when I click it and hit enter, KDE4 logs out. Very often, when I click on the konsole icon in my panel, I'll get the black screen. Very often, when I right-click on the desktop for Appearance settings, I'll get the black screen

This is getting quit annoying and ridiculous. First, they broke something that left a lot of people with multiple plasmoids on the desktop and blank icons on panels everywhere they couldn't get rid of. Now, randomly black screens and you never know when it will happen. The devs should do a lot more testing and quality assurance than pushing stuff in repo's as fast as possible... Test your **** multiple times before releasing it !!!!

System settings -> Desktop -> All effects tab -> Disable present windows.

I have yet to reproduce this bug and nobody has provided any useful details on what is causing it so therefore I cannot fix it. Also it is worth noting that this bug appeared AFTER the release of 4.2.0, chances are it is actually a driver bug.

What is your graphics card, graphics driver, graphics driver version, the output of `glxinfo` and the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

I disabled "present windows" but am afraid of clicking on the konsole button as I don't know if it'll drop me back to a black screen and I have a lot of tabs open in firefox and some unsaved work in kwrite.

Ok, so it seems disabling the "present windows" effect fixed it. I no longer get black screens but am still unsure if this is permanent because as I said, they appear very random. But so far, clicking on konsole icon and Appearance settings no longer results in black screen.

Or: chances are it could be that the OpenSUSE devs applied a patch or backported something...as much as I love OpenSUSE they are sometimes TOO "aggresive" (for a lack of a better word) in applying patches or backporting stuff.

Well my screen is permanent black,I can see the mouse and move around.
You should look at that page not only me others to the same problem,we should focus that problem.

I tried...unfortunately my knowledge of the german language isn't good enough to understand most of what is said there. Entschuldigung mir zu bitte (and I probably managed to make a couple of grammatical errors in that short sentence...).

Still, I don't think it's a driver-issue. I'm running nvidia's 180.29, in OpenSUSE 11.1 64bit. Now, I've always downloaded and installed the driver manually (mostly because the best version wasn't available in the repos when I installed 11.1) so that may be a factor even if unlikely. More importantly, I've used the driver almost since the day it was released and it wasn't until yesterday (I think) I got the black-screen. I've only had it once so far so I haven't had time or opportunity to pin it down yet.

What I think is that _something_ in the last or so factory-update screwed something up (also running v 102). IF it is indeed SUSE specific. The last couple of updates has not been the best OpenSUSE has ever published, granted, but that's a risk you take when you enable the factory or unstable repos.

The next time someone gets a black screen can they record what they were doing for a few minutes before it happened, specifically with KWin effects? All I really need is "activated alt+tab with cover switch", "launched Konqueror", "used the cube", etc. There is also the possibility it's a combination of effect usages that is causing present windows to make all windows invisible.

I describe two times this occurs:
1) Right click on desktop -> Appearance settings -> click on any drop down menu.
2) Zoom out, add an activity, zoom into new activity, right click -> add widget, drag and drop any widget from the list onto the desktop.

Also another one:
3) When editing a file with The GIMP, File -> Save a Copy. The window will hang for a while, then X will restart. (Not sure if it's the same thing, but this started occuring the same time as the other two things - so decided to include it) (Edit: I have tested this on Fluxbox and it works on Fluxbox, so this shows it is a KWin problem)

Might I note that:
1) Disabling window effects completely doesn't stop it.
2) If you remove the present window effects, or actually apply any sort of Desktop Effects config that doesn't include the present windows effect (as far as i've noticed) it will still not work, but once X starts up again, it will work ONCE. Eg: If it will allow me to click a drop down on the appearance settings dialog, but once I've done that, It will continue its crashes. Restarting X will also make it continue its crashes.

In my case, the blackiness appeared mostly when opening windows that use compositing (KRunner, Lancelot, Panel configuration) and it didn't cover the panel. Without activating any effect intentionally.

Enabled effects were: Fade, Login, Logout, Minimize Anim, Shadow, Slide, Taskbar Thumbs, Translucency, Dialog Parent, Dim Screen for Admin mode, Cover Switch, Desktop Grid, Present Wind.

It was fixable with Alt+Shift+F12 - to disable, and then again enable the desktop effects.

I've just encountered this thread, and disabled the present windows effect. No problems so far, will report if I get another BSoI (black screen of invisibility )

Definitely a driver issue in your case. If X crashes it's not a KWin problem--it might be triggering it, but the server should never restart or hang.

When desktop effects are disabled KWin doesn't do anything graphics-related so it's the contents of those windows that is causing the issue for you.

Well in my case, disabling the "present windows" effect fixes the problem. So far the black screen did not occur here

That has nothing to do with /this/ problem, it is a /normal/ Plasma crash which leaves black desktop. Please install the packages with debugging symbols included, and post the crash report at bugs.kde.org. And if it is not too much hassle, remove the backtrace from the post since it is unnecessary long and not useful for this post.

I can confirm this issue and I am not inclined to think it's strictly driver-related, because I could reproduce it on an i915 (GMA9000) and on an ATI (fglrx) card. Usually it happened when new windows were created (e.g., when a file dialog appeared, for example). For example, when I launched Quassel (maximized), I got the blank screen. My effects are the ones that are enabled by default in the control panel. Disabling present windows indeed fixed it for me.
