i tried the beta mandriva 2009.1 with kde 4.2 and after update the fonts become ugly (like the fonts of gnome) Very difficult to setup the antilizing, even if i have a good result is a little hard and painfull for the eyes the enviroment, so i went back to kde 4.1.3 (mandriva 2009.0) where everything works fine .

the only thing i'm sur is that the changed fonts are the same in gtk applications

2009.1 is a not released yet so it's still officially cooker, to report bug about cooker you really have to keep up with the updates because sometimes whatever problem you have might have been fixed in a later batch of updates.

The fonts look OK here, I don't know what's wrong at your end, it seems to be something with your set up, if it was common there would have been more reports of it. Try creating a new user account, see if it makes any difference.

i saw a screenshot of a user with mandriva 2009.0 4.2.1 and the fonts are with the "problem"
may be the others does nt take as a problem but is clear that it is a change in the fonts and they are like the fonts of gnome applications.
if a create a new user i have always the problem.

Is the only reason that i dont upgrade to kde 4.2

i did some test,
it is probable that now the default font is the dejavu and before was Liberation
I will try again with change all to Liberation.

Is it a way to find out when i choose "sans" which font is ?

On the german forum was a thread, where a user reported very similar problems. The cause was, that with the update (he did it with 'urpmi --auto-update') the package 'lib64freetype6-2.3.7-1plf2009.0' get installed and replaced 'lib64freetype6-2.3.7-1mdv2009.0'.
He undid this change and everything is fine now.

i ve replace (with --force) the libfreetype6-2.3.9-1plf2009.1 package with the libfreetype6-2.3.9-1mdv2009.1
and the fonts becomes normally like a magic !!!!

BTW sans is an alias to DejaVu Sans, this has always been the case in mdv, from 2008.0 to 2009.1.

ouf! after a lot of searching ...

-i ve checked when i was in 2009.0 the font settings in konqueror and htey were "Liberation sans" and in the serif fonts was "Dejavu Serif"
Now in 2009.1 i looked the font settings inside konqueror and it was everything in DejaVu, and i changed to Liberation , to have the same aspect as before
I did the same in systemsettings (i choosed Liberation and 96 DPI)

I am talking about the fonts in systemsettings not about the fonts in konqueror.

Installed Mandriva 2009.1 RC1 .... system fonts are named exactly as they were in the 2009.0 release, namely Sans Serif. As described, I, too, am feeling as the beautiful Mandriva fonts have been "blessed" with the GNOME-like look now.

Few posts back, there was posted a solution of replacing lib64... would anybody kindly offer the exact syntax, please? Mandriva newbie here ... don't know my way through the distro and the URPMI ...

Is there any repository I need to add before trying to do anything? Kindly guide, considering a newbie .... wonderful distro, and brilliant KDE ... switched from GNOME!

if you have the PLF repositories active , try to replace the package libfreetype6
you can download the libfreetype6 and save it, after you can installed with rpm -i --force libfreetype6xxxxxmdvx.rpm
and after you can uninstall the "wrong" one with urpme libfreetype6xxxxxxplfx.rpm
if you have a i586 you can download the rpm from here

Installed the update via Add Remove Software, and there was also listed version 2.3.8. I removed it, and it would want to take away a loada of software ... so I installed the one you gave, newer version, and after that could not see the 2.3.8 version. BTW, both were mdv 2009.1 versions ... I do not see the PLF version, nor do I know of a way to enable the PLF repos ...

The odd thing for me is that fonts in 2009.0 in the "Configure Your Computer" screen.. the first screen that comes, with three options for software and system, these fonts are way too big in the 2009.1 RC1, and were normal and beautiful in 2009.0.

This is even after the installation of the newer version .. dono if the previous one got uninstalled or not .. ?

may be in your case you need to change only the fonts from sans serif to liberation sans
try this and see if you have better results
