Hello all. I recently used the preupgrade method to take my linux box from Fedora F8 to F10. The F8 had KDE 3.5, though, and I ran into a big snag trying to get KDE back up and running properly. Here is a link to another thread on this board describing that process (Thanks for your help bcooksley!)
konsole not working after update Now that KDE4.2 is working, I'm wondering if I can get back some or all of my customization for the task manager, panels, and clock. I'm confident that whatever definition file(s) that had been used to store this information did not get erased since I renamed the old .kde directories for each user to .kdeold. I just don't know where in these directories to look. Unfortunately, I did all of that setup of wallpapers, fonts, icons, etc. almost two years ago. My soft brain can't recall how I did it all, and where the various key items are stored. I'd like to avoid doing it all over again, if possible. So my questions are: 1) Where would the old settings be? 2) Is there an operational reason that they may not be able to be merely copied into the new directory (e.g., KDE 4 needs to use different schema and it could not be imported)? 3) How should I proceed to bring back my comfortable desktop environment? Thanks, in advance for your help. |

Configuration for the Task Manager, Panels, Clock which was previously handled by Kicker, is now handled by a new application, Plasma. Unfortunately this means the file format has changed completely, and thus your old configuration is not usable, therefore you will have to manually recreate it.
Installed fonts should already be honoured by KDE 4, unless we are talking about changing the fonts used by KDE. I do not know how much this configuration has changed however.

Okay. Thanks again for all of your help. I will set about learning Plasma.
KDE4 is a nice upgrade. I just discovered the RDP client and have been enjoying the opportunity to work from home via my linux box! :shade: |
