Hello All,
I am now on Sabayon with KDE 3.5. I always backup and restore my KDE settings by backing up .kde. I recently installed Sabayon 4r1 with KDE4 and I wanted to restore my previuos KDE settings, so I restored .kde3.5 and relinked with .kde. Unfortulately after the environment was working for a couple of days it started to behave erratically. It would change my Desktop resulution, would not allow me to change it back, it would completelty discard my settings and start the KDE wizzard. Really annoying. I then went back to KDE3.5. My question is, was I doing something wrong? Is it not possible for the KDE4 version to read my .kde3.5 and just do some kind of an upgrade? Is there any HOW TO on that subject? I Searched on this forum looking for the word upgrade, but didn't find anything useful. Thanks for helping. Richard.

No I'm sorry to tell you but there is really a small compatibility between KDE3 and KDE4 dot files wise.
AFAIK the most crashes happen because of there are some .KDE3 files in .KDE4 and are confusing the system. So I fear that you'll have to leave all your dot files behind. But I'm not completely sure. Some might work.

Some distros, e.g. openSUSE, get round this by changing the names of the hidden files so that it is possible for KDE3 to co-exist with KDE4. Obviously, if you want that option, you have to switch to a distro that offers this. Otherwise, it's a case of waiting until you can do without KDE3.
