Hello,

I would like to ask what could this problem be in KDE 3.5. I boot my Sabayon Linux, login and KDE cannot start completely. It freezes, I think on these messages in the file .xsession-errors:
Code: Select all
xset:  bad font path element (#101), possible causes are:
    Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
    Incorrect font server address or syntax
startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit: Shutting down running client.

It looks like dcopserver is already running. If you are sure
that it is not already running, remove /home/rysiek/.DCOPserver_localhost__0
and start dcopserver again.

where options include:
    -grammar                       print out full grammar for command line
    -display host:dpy              the X server to contact
    -id id                         resource id of window to examine
    -name name                     name of window to examine
    -font name                     name of font to examine
    -remove propname               remove a property
    -set propname value            set a property to a given value
    -root                          examine the root window
    -len n                         display at most n bytes of any property
    -notype                        do not display the type field
    -fs filename                   where to look for formats for properties
    -frame                         don't ignore window manager frames
    -f propname format [dformat]   formats to use for property of given name
    -spy                           examine window properties forever

startkde: Done.

I then press CNTRL+Backspace to reload X-Window and then I can login and KDE starts. This always happens every day when I start my computer. The first KDE always hangs, the second finished and starts. I know there is a newer KDE4 version, but maybe there is a simple way to fix this problem?

Thanks for helping in advance.
Richard

Well I'm not any expert, but my bet is on this error:
Code: Select all
WARNING: Waiting for already running klauncher to exit.

I was still a noob when I went from my KDE3 to 4, so I might be talking non-sense.
I would find klauncherrc (it's in .kde) and delete it then try and restart KDE. I know that means loosing your settings but I would do that just to be sure.
If that's not the case then I (I'm more destructive in nature :D) would delete the whole .kde folder; off course I would back it up before that.
Then it should work(tm). But then again if you get that far installing KDE4 doesn't sounds that much of a jump :D.

Hope that helps just a bit.

Also try deleting all of KDE's sockets outside a KDE session:
Code: Select all
rm -rf /tmp/ksocket-$USER/
rm -f ~/.DCOP*

Thanks very much. I don't know if this is the file:
.kde/share/config/klaunchrc

And this is what's in it:
Code: Select all
[BusyCursorSettings]
Blinking=false
Bouncing=true
Timeout=8

[FeedbackStyle]
BusyCursor=true
TaskbarButton=true

[TaskbarButtonSettings]
Timeout=8

I don't know if I can remove the file.
I have a copy with all my settings, the whole .kde directory. So I remove .kde and restore it. This doesn't seem to work.
However, when I checked my ROOT account, which works all the time does not have the .kde linked to .kde3.5, which I have on my account. I restored my KDE settings by restoring my backup directly into .kde. This didn't help.

I'll try bcooksley's solution and keep you posted.

Regards,
Richard.

I wouldn't say that klaunchrc is the file that you need. But I guess it doesn't matter.
I would try and copy root settings to user. As you reported that it works.

BTW do you have more than one panel, or did you had it in past?

Hi,

I have two panels, one on the top, and the standard KDE.
Copying from Root, yes that is the choice, but the problem is I spent too much time configuring my "Look and Feel" that I would hate to loose my settings to go through the painful process of configuring again. That's why I have a backup of .kde to be able to restore my settings.

Let's wait and see, I don't reboot my machine during weekends, so the next try is on Monday.

Thanks.
Richard.
