A strange problem...
Having decided that the benefits of desktop effects were outweighed by the disadvantages, I decided to disable them. But without desktop effects, I no longer get a logout dialogue when I right-click on the desktop and select "Leave". The session manager settings are set to "confirm logout" and "offer shutdown options", which is correct for what I want. If I fire up Compiz, or enable desktop effects in System Settings, the dialogue appears after selecting "leave", but if I don't, the only thing that happens is that the background fades (as I'd expect) but no dialogue appears. Any ideas gratefully received.

UPDATE: still haven't fixed it, but I've managed to narrow it down to something in my user config. If I create a completely new user, the logout dialogue appears OK under it.
Now if I can just work out what's got mis-configured I might have a chance... |

For info if anybody else has this problem, I got an answer from Ubuntu forums - delete ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc and the logout dialogue reappeared.
The only noticeable side-effect was to revert the theme to the default. Not particularly worrying... |

Update. Having removed the plasmarc file and then setting up my desktop to use the theme it was using before, I didn't initially notice any problem. Because of course, the dialogue isn't affected by the theme until the next time I log in (evidently it just changes the appearance, not anything else). So as soon as I logged in again with the new theme, the logout dialogue had again vanished. So somewhere, there's a nasty bug with the ionized air theme. |
