My panel icons disappear, leaving everything blank...

I'm certain this question/topic has been raised before. So if it needs to be redirected, that's ok. I just couldn't find results for "my panel disappears" from the search. I've posted in this channel because I thought it would be the most relevant.

So here's the situation. I'm running KDE-4.2.2 on Slackware. Intermittently "my panel disappears". And the frequency of this event is increasing. The icons disappear, leaving no tooltips on mouseover. I can still navigate from one desktop to another, simply because I'm so familiar with the layout of my system.

What I've been doing is killing plasma and restarting it. However, that doesn't bring back all of the icons that should be present. Many icons which were present when KDE started (@17), never reappear. SuperKaramba applets must be killed and restarted also.

Please forgive me for likely reposting an earlier topic.

I just found out that clicking on the plasmoids on the desktop doesn't bring up their configuration options either. In fact, all interaction with the desktop controls is disconnected.

So one of the things I would like to know, is which command initiates the loading of icons in the panel when KDE first starts? That may be a better solution for this than just restarting plasma (which happens to be still running). I tried running kdeinit4, but that doesn't do anything.

And I don't know if this is related or not. But I no longer have an icon in systemsettings for Autostart-Applications. And when I try to launch it with Alt-F2, this is the output I get:
KDEInit could not launch 'kcmshell'.:
Could not find 'kcmshell' executable.

I have many KDE3 applications on my system, since Slackware has not yet formally switched to KDE4. There are compatibility tools to allow me to use those applications. I don't know if there is a conflict happening here or not. But I think the system should be looking for kdeinit4 and kcmshell4.

Could you post a screenshot?
Can you reproduce this with a new user?

It appears that you have locked the Plasma desktop. This can be rectified by right clicking the desktop and selecting "Unlock Widgets". Then use the Add Widget dialog to add "System Tray" and "Task Manager" to your panel.

If this problem persists after logging out and in after using the above to fix the problem, you have a damaged Plasma configuration. Use the following to reset it to default:
Code: Select all
rm -f $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasm*

The advice to right-click on the desktop is invalid. There is no response from right-clicking on the desktop (or the panel). There is no Almond in the upper right corner of the screen from which to make changes either. And this has been going on for a very long time. And I have read from other posts elsewhere, that removing the current profile, resetting it to the default doesn't work either. In every case that that has been done, the problem reoccurs. As a result, I need a command which will reload the icons on the panel to their original condition when KDE starts. What command does KDE run when the desktop is first being loaded? Whatever KDE program draws the icons and prints the text on the desktop, ceases to work.

Is there an "Error Console" for KDE? All of this is rather futile. There needs to be a way to see precisely what events are likely triggering this.

KDE Outputs all error messages to ~/.xsession-errors.

There is no way to force Plasma to redraw / reposition widgets as far as I am aware.
kcmshell was renamed kcmshell4 in order to avoid conflict with KDE 3 applications.

It might help to completely remove the cache's and temporary directories:
Please do this outside a KDE session.
Code: Select all
rm -rf /var/tmp/kdecache-$(id -un)/
rm -rf /tmp/kde-$(id -un)/
rm -rf /tmp/ksocket-$(id -un)

The fact that the cashew is missing is very unusual, almost like Plasma can't access its plugins, so try rebuilding the Sycoca, which should fix the missing control module issue also:
Code: Select all
kbuildsycoca4 --noincrmental

So why do I have calls being made to kcmshell instead of kcmshell4? Something is broken there, because it used to work, and doesn't anymore.

I think maybe you should see this. After running the command you gave above (kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental), this was part of the output:

What's wrong with XDG here? How relevant is this to the problem being experienced?

I don't know if I was supposed to do this after fixing the cache or not. But nothing changed as a result of running that command. Everything is still as it was.

I just found out that even though the Almond is invisible in the top right corner, it can still be activated. However, once you unlock the desktop, you cannot change the "Appearance Settings". And if you try to logout without restarting the panel first through Plasma, the system will just hang, and you then have to Ctl-Alt-Backspace.

I just went into the systemsettings, and tried to "Enable desktop effects". I was looking for something else. When I entered the Apply button, it had the same effect as restarting plasma. So I temporarily have the panel back. I guess I could just keep doing that for now on, since I also got back ALL (except one) of my icons as well. But this really makes no sense!

Those non XDG compliant messages are normal, KDE is pedantic about specification compliance, and warns when it is not compliant ( it can still handle it though )

The fact that the Cashew is invisible yet usable, and that toggling desktop effects helped points towards a problem in your graphics drivers. If you are using ATI or NVidia, please ensure they are completely updated and correctly installed. You may wish to try with the "vesa" driver to verify this theory.

I should have been more clear. I tried to toggle the desktop effects. But when I did, plasma crashed (It did complain about the driver not being correct). When it came back (reloaded itself), all except one icon was back. However, that icon would not allow me to right click on it to bring it up.

The driver issue may be valid though. But there's a small problem here. I'm running Slackware on top of a 64-bit kernel. Trying to install the Nvidia driver doesn't work. Because the ARCH is never reported correctly (even when using the linux32 command). So the driver never installs. I don't know if installing a 32-bit kernel would allow me to install the driver or not. Because I remember having trouble trying to install it before. This whole damn situation is a PITA!! Right while I was typing this, the panel disappeared again.

Can you please provide the output of "glxinfo | grep -i direct" and post your xorg.conf file?

This is what I get from running that command:
bash-4.0$ glxinfo | grep -i direct
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

Sorry about the following, but I didn't see how I was supposed to attach a file. So I've had to print out the entire xorg.conf file:

If this can't be fixed, once and for all, I will have to start using XFCE. At least this kind of thing doesn't happen when I use it. Having this occur every twenty minutes (or less) is not acceptable. And then to top it off, I can't logout without Ctl-Alt-Backspace. I think there's no excuse for not providing the user to reload their desktop to the state it was on startup.

Approximately twenty minutes later, and my panel is blank again. Given the frequency of the occurrence, I'm wondering if it's tied to my screensaver. Because the screensaver is the only thing that I'm aware of that has a set time interval. My screensaver was working before without issue. But now, it's making my screen go blank, and I haven't changed anything.
