I running gentoo with kde 4.2.2, hal-0.5.12_rc1, dbus-1.2.3-r1, x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics-1.0.0.

in kde 3.5.9/10 my touchpad worked without a problem, since I've upgraded to kde 4.2.2, I cannot use it, it get stuck, jumps and moves erratically.

when I plug an external usb mouse, it works without a problem.
any thoughts on how to fix this?

thanks

You may wish to check that your Touchpad configuration has not become altered somehow, and that your desired settings have been set in System Settings > Mouse & Keyboard > Mouse.

Do you have this problem in KDM (login screen)? Can you reproduce with a new user?

You need to ensure that your Xorg configuration is correct, since that appears to be the culprit given that KDM is also affected.

If you have the problem in KDM, a new user is most likely to be affected too. Did you upgrade something else when you upgraded to KDE4?

nope, went from xorg-server 1.3 to 1.5 couple of months before, the touchpad configured via hal, tried to remove the fdi file to see if there is a difference but no difference was seen
do you want me to post my configuration files?

Assuming both KDM and a user KDE session are affected, it is clearly part of your system configuration, likely in Xorg, or HAL, since I do not believe KDE changes settings like this in KDM. You could try with another display manager to verify this.

ok, switched from the closed ati drivers to the open source one, now the cursor jumps from point a to b with a delay
if I change the mouse settings in the systemsettings, will it affect the external usb mouse too?

Probably, since it likely changes the settings on the pointer. It is possible that if you plug the external mouse in afterwards that it will use default settings ( though unlikely )

What's the output of this as root in konsole:
lshal | grep -i touchpad

Have you used qsynaptics? If there's a .qsynatics file in your /home directory, try renaming it, then log out / log in.

Code: Select all
lshal | grep -i touchpad
  info.capabilities = {'input', 'input.mouse', 'input.touchpad'} (string list)

no qsynaptics installed, never used it

more info, now running kde 4.2.4 with ati open source drivers, the touchpad works without any problems in the login screen, the minute the screen changes to the splash login screen the pad's movement becomes choppy.
