Hi all,

After I enable Desktop Effect on my Kubuntu 9.04-KDE4.2.2, the system immediately got unresponding. When I restart the system, it went OK until ksplash and it just stuck there.

I want to redisable the desktop effect from the terminal. I tried ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc but there are no "[configure]" in this file. I tried deleting the file, but the problem still exists. Even if I delete the whole .kde, the problem is still there. I think Kubuntu 9.04 has found another way to register this information.

Could anyone tell me what should I do to disable desktop effect?

See if ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc exists. I'm not sure if Kubuntu uses .kde or .kde4 for KDE4.

If you can log in to another user on the system, then from konsole:
su - yourusername
systemsettings

replace yourusername with the name of the affected user.

I searched, but there were no ".kde4" in ~
There was one file "~/.config/Trolltech.conf", in which there is a "GUIEffects" term, but it's already set to "none".

I could only log in from the live CD "trial mode", but "su - username" was not allowed. If I use "systemsettings", it only sets the configuration for the "trial mode".

It won't work from a live cd.

I think you need to delete ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc while you are not logged in to kde. So log out and delete the file from tty.

I tried that in the first place, from safe mode from prompt. But "kwinrc" didn't contain "[configure]" option as some people mentioned, and deleting it did not help solving the problem.

In my ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc, I have
Code: Select all
[Compositing]
AnimationSpeed=4
.
.
.
Enabled=true
.
.
.

You could try to set Enabled to false. Unfortunately my KDE4 setup is broken at the moment (I use trunk and something strange happened last time I build it), so I can't double check if this disables compositing.

if anything else fails (like if kde enables composite back all the time etc) do this

install kde 3 / gnome / etc

start it

run /usr/bin/systemsettings from it
