Just set up KDE on this machine last week and printing is giving me fits.
First the stats: Dell Dimension 4700 512K Ram Debian Lenny KDE 3.5.10 Printer HP Photosmart 7260 Kprint interface shows : Type: Local Printer State: Processing...(accepting jobs) Location: Office Description: HPPhotosmart 7260 URL://ipp:/localhost:631/Printers/HPPhotosmart Device: hp:/usb/phosmart_7200_series?serial=xxxxxxxx Model: HP Photosmart 7200 series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.6b Print System currently used CUPS(Common Unix Print System) Server:/var/run/cups/cups.sock I've got it to work twice in the last week. To do that I had to start with the system shutdown, unplug the usb cable and power to the printer, wait for several minutes then replug both and restart the desktop., when I did the printer would come on with the system. If I shutdown the system, then the printer would stay on and and pressing the power button on the printer would not turn it off.. Now I can't get it to print at all. I created two short test notes with Kedit this morning but neither would print. They appear in the Jobs tab of the KPrint interface and appear listed in the jobs if I open the CUPS (localhost:631) interface. Am in deep doo on this and need a starting point TNX J35Pen |

Does it provide an error message when the jobs will not print? The CUPS web interface usually indicates one. If it is something like "device not found" try powering down the printer, stopping CUPS, powering up the printer then starting CUPS.

Started up this morning and again no printing. Opened cups and viewed the error log which showed this. At this point am going to do a restart and then look at the error log. Did the restart with debug enabled and that log is very lengthy. Have cut out a couple of sections of it. So it seems there's an authentication problem. And I'll have to try to figure that out unless someone knows what that problem indicates. J

These two errors look more like a problem I think....
E [14/May/2009:08:27:08 -0400] PID 2802 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip) crashed on signal 9! E [14/May/2009:08:27:08 -0400] PID 2804 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp) crashed on signal 9! This means there is some problem with the HP backend on your system, I would recommend ensuring they are correctly installed and updated, cables are connected properly, that CUPS has the correct printer type selected.

I found the HPLIP web site and saw there was a troubleshooting section. Followed the commands there which led to installing more packages and then determined that my USB cable was not not working. Robbed one from another printer and am now printing. Thanks for your support and help. J |
