Hi all! I am new to the community :)

I love KDE more than any piece of software in the whole wide world! So I stick to it no matter what. KDE is fun but akonadi ruins it(Atleast I think so).

Well I use Archlinux with KDE 4.2.3. Nvidia 6200 256 MB card with proprity drivers, p4 with 1.2 GB RAM. Everything works mint and my arch too runs vanilla. However while booting the KDE freezes like hell! around 12-15 minutes!! I cant use KDE for that time and just stare at it(I can use console though). But this happens intermittently.

What I did: 1>I disabled the akonadi server successfully(by reading tips from google as well as kde forum) and for few restarts it worked fine, I was able to start PC and start using KDE in a minute! But after that again for few restarts the KDE freezes!
2> I enabled akonadi successfully and it runs fine w/o error messages(altough I dont use any of its resources in any way),it works fine for few restarts then again the freezing saga begins :(

What could be the problem?
Statistics - 3/10 reboots work fine, rest they freeze around 15 minutes!! Help, its very frustrating to wait 15 mins everytime I boot PC.

Hi kapz - I've got the same setup as you, Arch with vanilla KDE. I am happy to say I have not suffered from such problems :)

Anyway, have you checked the logs during/after such weird lock down? Either /var/log/messages.log or /var/log/errors.log might have something in there. For xorg related stuff check /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Anyhow, what do these lock ups look look like? At which stage during KDE initialization do they occur? Also check the kdm log.

Hi arch mate! Thank you for the pointer :)

As suggested I looked in almost all log files in /var. I found the error in error.log and daemon.log & kdm.log which is the same, it reads "Cannot open default user face", could this be problem?

Well the lock looks like - After I enter password in KDM login and proceed, the whole desktop is black for a while and then the desktop comes up but I cannot do anything except moving mouse and pressing ctrl+alt+f1!!! for darn 15 mins!!!
