Hi All,
I'm looking for a way to have loaded full settings of other user than the one used to login to KDE on one of desktops. Let's say I have configured for desktops under userA KDE profile and on desktop number 4 I'd like to have loaded as much as possible from userB profile. Why do I need it? Cause I have to use two different users to run some applications. Currently used workaround is to run terminal session, change to other user profile (sudo or su) and run needed application. This works, but it would be nice to have complete environment of the userB automatically loaded on one of the desktops. Does anyone know how to achieve this? I've tried to find something already on the net and here on this forum, but didn't find anything. Any help is highly apprieciated. Regards, Bugsy |

Well, X don't support this feature but there is a trick to do something like you need.
You must instal NXserver in your machine, there is a free version of this software, and, when you need other session, you can launch NXClient in other desktop and connect to a local session with the user you like. You can do the same with VNC but, in my test, NX has better overal performance. Off course, it's not exactly that you need, don't try to launch a 3D game in a NX session but almost all your programs works fine. I do somethin similar with rdesktop to connect to a Windows Terminal Server because I must develop with a tool that only works in Windows.

Thanks for the hint. I didn't try yet NX server neither FreeNX as thought that using Xnest might be better idea for local use (same machine).
Currently I have minor issue with Xnest as well as with Xephyr as the quality of nested KDE4 session is not good. Looks like "transparency" support is missing hence whole desktop looks not so good. If I won't find working settings with Xephyr I'll try to go with NX server/FreeNX. Did you experience any problems with FreeNX /NX server? And second question, why did you decide to go with NX server and not FreeNX? Thanks in advance. |

I don't remember well but FreeNX was slow and lacks a lot of functionallity over NoMachine NX. Since there is a free version of NX I lost all my interest in FreeNX and I don't know the current state of this project.
