Windows not repainted properly

Sat May 30, 2009 5:01 pm
Hello,
I'm having a weird problem and I can't quite get its cause, because it seems to happen randomly. Whenever I have a Terminal open (Konsole, but it also does the same in Yakuake and other Terminal-like apps), it works fine at the beginning, but at some point I get a lot of redrawing problems; the display doesn't update itself when it should: some of the "rows" get stuck and don't update with the line of text that they should display; and I end up having to highlight the text in the Terminal window or resizing the window to force it to repaint itself properly.

I've noticed that this only happens once all the lines of the Terminal window have been "used" at least once, but then again it doesn't happen all of the time. Sometimes it fixes itself for a moment. It's weird... It also seems not to happen on low resolutions (640x480) but it does on my screen's native resolution (1920x1200).

I know this is not very precise but I don't know what other details I should add, please tell me. I'll put some generic details that might be related:
Kubuntu 9.04 64-bit with KDE 4
Using Compiz-fusion as window manager, lots of plugins enabled but nothing experimental
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT with latest (180) proprietary drivers

This might be related to this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=187356

I also experience the same problem, maybe you can try to switch KDE style from Oxygen as a workaround before it is fixed.

No, it's not that kind of graphical corruption, it's a lot better-looking than that ;)
Anyway, I solved it myself quite a while ago (sorry for not posting it here sooner); I had to enable the "Force synchronization between X and GLX" option in Compiz's workarounds plugin.
