I just installed Kubuntu 9.04 x86_64. After a few logins, I noticed the login sound was no longer playing, nor the empty trash sound. I went to System Settings -> Notifications to try to turn them back on, but "KDE System Notifications" (as I seem to remember it being called) wasn't in the "Sources" pulldown, only "KDE Window Manager Events" among numerous individual apps. How could this break, and, more importantly, how can I fix it?

Are there any files with notification endings in $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config?

Yes, for KWin and KPackageKit. (There's also 'knotifyrc' but I assume that's simply the config for KNotify.)

Can you reproduce the problem on a new user?
If you can't try running the following command:
If you can, ensure that your system KDE installation has not been damaged.
