Hi,
on openSuSE-11.1 I have KDE-4.2.4

In your "KDE User Guide" is to be read (p. 28f):
"To create a new launcher [on the desktop], right click on
the desktop, and choose Create New -> Link to Application.
On the KDesktop properties dialog box type in the name of
the program on the General tab..."

I know this from KDE-3.5.9 "release 49.1" But with KDE-4.2.4
the dialog box does not show of this.

How can I create a launcher on the desktop?

Thanks for answer,
Werner.

Thread moved to Desktop Environment & Window Manager.

For creating launcher on your desktop, right click on the desktop, select "Unlock Widgets" (if applicable)
Now click on the application launcher (KMenu) on the taskbar, find the application and drag n' drop it on your desktop.
If you have the "Folder view" widget enabled, right click on folder view, Create New > Link to Application.

Thanks for the rapid answer.

Where do I find the "Folder view" widget and where I have to enable it?
(I have a german version.)

You can add the widget in the same way as you add any other widget:
Click on cashew Image. If you've locked your desktop, you have to unlock it first, then click on "Add Widget" (it should be the first button after you've clicked on the cashew).

In the Add Widgets dialog, search for Folder View (unfortunately I don't know what it's called in German - Mappe Sicht vielleicht?) and drag it to the desktop.

If you want your whole desktop to behave like a Folder View, click on cashew Image -> Appearance Settings (probably last button). In the dialog, change "Type" to "Folder View". Screenshot.
You can also read more about it here under "Traditional Desktop".

I did so, chanced "Arbeitsfläche" = Desktop to Plain Desktop, Desktop without
toolbox. Then "Apply" and the screen becomes black. After some seconds the
screen appears with the old standard desktop.
No "Folder View" is to be seen.
No success.
Werner.

Is Folder View available from the Applets menu?
Try running KBuildSycoca4 anyway:
Code: Select all
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

Oh Dear. Does Folder View function correctly under a new user?

Under an other user it does not crash, but there ist also no "folder view"
only "Standard-Arbeitsfläche" (Desktop) and "Arbeitsfläche ohne
Werkzeugbox" (Cluttered Desktop). I have a german version of KDE4.

Because a new user is affected, it means the problem is system wide. Please ensure your packages are fully updated.

Are you sure you have KDE 4.2.4 and not the 4.1.4 version? As far as I know, openSUSE includes the 4.1.x version by default, and Folder View as desktop type was introduced in KDE 4.2.

O.K. I uploaded KDE 4.2.4 for openSuSE-11.1 from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... nSUSE_11.1
and Qt 4.4 from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... nSUSE_11.1

Rightclick on the desktop -> Appearance Settings -> Type:
Ordner-Ansicht (Folder View) appears now and I select this.

So far so well!

Now two sorts of icons are to be seen on the desktop:

1) Icons which appear firstly without doing something.
These are icons and programs which I selected in former times.
(Remainders of KDE-4.1?)

2) Icons which I get with
Kickoff Application Launcher -> Applications -> ...
With the mouse cursor on this icon it appears the new gray menu bar.
(These my be the normal one of KDE-4.2.)

With the mouse cursor on the icons 1) only a shadowed rectangularly border
appears. Rightclick on the icon causes some seconds black and then some
seconds white on screen and last the desktop with the icons 2) and some
later -- if at all -- the icons 1) appear. So I get no chance changing the picture
or deleting the launcher from the desktop. -- Mind you, the widgets are unlocked.

Often those of icon 1) appear only if I wipe with the cursor over the green
desktop surface.

Rightclick on empty desktop causes no chance creating new launchers for
my own programs.
Rightclick -> Create New -> Link to Device -> [nothing at all]

So my problems remain.

You have selected the "Folder View" desktop type? This is a "Classic" KDE 3 styled desktop look ( ie. files from ~/Desktop on the desktop )
