MP3 player not detected on insertion

I am running KDE 3.5.7 as delivered with Slackware 12.0. I am using two external pieces of hardware that I connect to my PC into USB sockets. The first one, a digital camera, is detected by KDE fine, in the sense that when I plug the camera into the USB socket and turn it on, KDE pops up a window telling me that it has detected this device, and asking me how to proceed.

The second device is an MP3 player. When I plug it in KDE does not seem to detect it; at least, no window pops up asking me what to do. However, the kernel recognizes it all right as /dev/sdc, and I can mount it from the command line as root by means of

# mount /dev/sdc /mnt/flash

(the device is actually formatted like a FAT floppy - i.e. it has no partitions.)

Ideally, what I would like is for KDE to detect this device and mount it correctly to a mount point of my choice. In light of the above, can anybody suggest how to twist KDE's arm into achieving this?

I believe I have had a similar problem on kubuntu 08.04. Have you tried a different user? It might work as advertised.

That makes no difference. What I noticed is that under System -> Info Center -> USB Devices the device appears listed all right (after being inserted and activated,) although KDE, unlike the kernel, seems to be unable to identify the manufacturer. But, it recognizes the device as a USB disk. Other than that, it does nothing about it.
