I just installed KDE4, and I want to add buttons for some of my scripts and other things that are not in the system menu. But where has the Custom Application Launcher gone?

You mean QuickLaunch? Right click on desktop/panel -> (Unlock Widgets if they're locked) -> Add Widgets... -> Drag "QuickLaunch" to your panel.
If you don't have QuickLaunch in the list, you might need to install more packages. Which distro do you use? |

If you wish to add your scripts / applications / etc to the menu you can right click on the menu launcher icon and select "Menu Editor"

Hans: I use debian, which suddenly decided it had to install kde4 when I installed a new version of some program. I don't see quicklaunch anywhere, do you know which package I can find it in?

There is no quicklaunch debian package as far as I can see. I use kubuntu and quicklaunch is there in the default plasma package. But debian seems to use a bit different package structure. Note that quicklaunch is not a unique name like "Dolphin" and therefore should be translated to whatever language you have set up.

Alt+F2 can do the job until you find where the plasmoid is hidden.

Right-click an open area or on most icons in any *panel* [bottom bar] (try a few different spots, sometimes it doesn't stick for open areas) and look for "+ Add Launcher".
