Not sure what's going on here. This is a double-post from the Gentoo forums (where I've not gotten a reply in roughly 24 hours). Symptoms are I login fine, but after the splash screen disappears, the desktop isn't built. The machine is alive, as the mouse cursor can be moved, and I can ssh in and look around.
I've installed this version which I believe is marked stable from the kde-testing overlay on a gentoo system. This is the log from ~/.xsession-errors Not sure, but the "<unknown program name>" bits look kind of bad. Any help is appreciated.
Just in case, here's the whole thing.

At which stage ( ie. which icons are present on screen ) does it freeze during login?

Well, the splash screen comes up. The first four icons come into focus... the 5th one barely focuses, and then the splash screen disappears. There's no text on screen, and this is my first KDE4 install, so I'm not sure which one is that. |

Is the system still fully responsive in other aspects? ( ie. can switch to VT or accessible via SSH )
This sounds like a problem related to 3D, do you use the NVidia or ATI drivers?

I'm using the latest driver set from ati. The version that supports my card (4350 HD) is not yet available in portage.
The system is fully functional other than X -- I SSH'ed in to get the .xsession-errors log file while the machine was in this weird state. I thought about reinstalling and whatnot, but when I try to emerge kde-meta:4.2 with portage, it only wants to recompile one small piece...not pull everything in. I don't know if that would help, but I'm not really getting anywhere else. Hmm... looking at Xorg.0.log file, maybe this is the problem:
