Problems with USB stick

Sun Aug 09, 2009 1:05 pm
I am having problems copying files to a usb stick with dolphin. The files copy fine to another folder and another machine on my wired network, but not onto the usb stick. The icons appear, but no content. This eems to be a new problem.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

What filesystem does the USB stick use?

the stick is a 4Gb PNY fat 32 device.

I have subsequently reformatted the stick.

I've just tried copying a folder to the stick and I have the same problem. When the stick is attached the copied file appears to be readable. I then remove the stick and plug back in. Plugging back in and the pdf file in the folder I have copied shows 0bytes and won't open.

I tried the copy twice once without using the disconnect option and without.

I can copy a jpg file OK it just seems to be a problem with folders. The contents appear as icons, but with no data.

M.

PS I am using KDE4.3 on kubuntu by the way.

So what you are saying is that if you copy files individually there is no issue and if you copy a folder the files in the folder are getting corrupted.

What about the existing files in the disk. I mean the ones you copied individually, do they also get corrupted.

Try to check the device for any filesystem or bad cluster errors.

You can use fsck.vfat. Check `man fsck.vfat`

My son has successfully copied the same folder to the stick with his XP machine. The files are readable with the XP and Kubuntu machines. I am 90% sure it's an issue with dolphin.

Got to go, I'll try your suggestion and post back, cheers, Mike.

I'm a bit nervous of using fsck...

I can report that the problem occurs on two other memory sticks.

If you open Konqueror and browse to /media/ and find the attached USB drive, does copying files there work fine?

Also, does using the command line method using Konsole work?

If the Konsole method worked perfectly, but it did not work using Dolphin or Konqueror, then it appears to be a problem in Kubuntu. Before filing a bug at launchpad, can you please check to see if it works under a new user?

If it works under a new user, then there is a broken configuration file that needs to be fixed.

If it does not, please report a bug at Launchpad after ensuring your packages are fully up to date.

I'll carry out all checks again and r4port back and file bug if necessary. I'll do that tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

dolphin copy of pdf file fail, konqueror fail, kde konsole fail.

With konsole the pdf file appears in /media/disk and is readable from there, but as soon as I remove the usb drive and replace it the pdf file no longer appears.

Do you want me to use proper terminal?

I have run cp /home/mike/test.pdf /media/disk/ and I get "cannot create regular file 'media/disk/' is a directory".

cp /home/mike/test.pdf /home/mike/AONB/ successfully copies the test file into the AONB folder.

have I lost the plot or should I log a bug.

At the point where you try to copy using Konsole, have you opened the drive in Dolphin so that it is mounted?

I've used konsole with my test.pdf file and it will copy and the icon appears on the dolphin window. The file is usable..........

If i remove the drive from the machine the file becomes unusable (0b), however, if i use the "remove safely" button then the file is copiedd correctly.

I am pretty sure that having to use the remove safely button wasn't necessary in the past...

Again, if i am being dim, please forgive me!

I appear to have got to the bottom of my issue. I've just created a test folder with a good number of files. I copied it to the drive and the files within are usable. The folder appears very quickly and there is no obvious copy time. I use the remove safely button and there is now a delay before the dolphin window is refreshed and the files are unmounted. the saved files are now usable and have been copied correctly.

Conclusion is that copying to the drive requires the "safely remove" button to be used. I am 99% sure that previously drag and drop and removig the drive did the job.

Is the obligatory use of the "safely remove" button intended with KDE4.3?

cheers, and sorry if this is a spurious matter.

Mike.
