KDE 4.3.64 (KDE 4.4 >= 20090812)) "release 2"
openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 for the last several kde unstable releases from opensuse i have been unable to logout normally. i have to kill the xserver to login again. my question is: is there a way to logout via command line so i can see where the stalling/hanging is occurring?

You need to use QDBus to communicate with KSMServer. Unfortunately that will not provide output to your terminal. I would recommend looking at the contents of ~/.xsession-errors after having restarted the X server. ( use another user or login at a VT and move the file to something else )

by "move the file to something elese" do you mean to rename/delete the file?

Yes.
I would recommend using a virtual terminal, and moving the file, then posting its contents here / on pastebin.

ok, here is the login: http://pastebin.com/m990ad2b
and here is the logout: http://pastebin.com/m5031ec7c the "logout" log contains some login entries as well though. i deleted the original xsession-errors log (from command line), logged in, then tried to logout but couldn't of course, so i had to kill the xserver but that time instead of dumping me back to command line login it dumped me back to a screen with the kde/xserver errors and i couldn't login without a prompt. so i had restart the PC and thus the logout log contains some login info as well i'm sure. |

Unfortunately when you login using X the ~/.xsession-errors file is cleared, so the "logout" file only contains logging in information.

I recommended performing the force logout, then switching to a VT and moving the ~/.xsession-errors file somewhere else so it wouldn't get overwritten. Then posting the moved file here. The file is only affected if you login using the X server ( and only if you don't move it ).

Can you please post the file that you moved from ~/.xsession-errors after force logging out?
It may also help to clear your cache:

solved. it was this bug: http://osdir.com/ml/kde-bugs-dist/2009-08/msg02999.html
solution: disable the logout sound. |

Interesting. I'll note that for future trouble shooting,
