I'm not sure what I've changed but when I now boot my system, the following is seen:
1. knetworkmanager crashes 2. the Task Manager does not show windows that are open 3. my tray icon is also empty. 4. my desktop background looks to be set to transparent. It is the light grey/lighter grey checkerboard pattern. I unchecked the setting to have knetworkmanager show a tray icon and I no longer get the knetworkmanager crash but the other problems remain. Any thoughts?? thanks, chris p.s. Using Kubuntu 9.04, AMD64 build

The Task Manager not showing any open Windows indicates the lack of a window manager.
The checkboard background indicates Plasma has failed to load any wallpaper plugins. Try logging out and performing the following. Your Plasma and KWin settings will be erased. This MUST be performed outside a KDE session, using a virtual terminal.
KDE Sysadmin
