Can't use hardware suspend (Fn+F4)

Thu Oct 08, 2009 1:49 am
Hello all.

I have a Thinkpad T61p, and I'm an experienced Linux user. The problem is that I can't suspend my laptop using the keyboard shortcut Fn+F4. It's not my laptop because it works in Gnome on Ubuntu and Fedora. However, I can't get it to work with either distribution when using KDE. I checked the keyboard shortcuts in System Settings, but there didn't appear to be anything for suspend. How would I get this shortcut to work? Do I just need to install some hotkey package (like a gnome app)?

Here's something I was thinking, but don't know how to implement. I believe there is a command that's run to suspend the computer, and I thought that I could just create a keyboard shortcut to run that command. The only problem that I can think of is that I can't set keyboard shortcuts to use the Fn key, but Alt or the windows key would also work fine. How would I create a new keyboard shortcut?

Thanks for the help.

If you want to create a new shortcut:
  • open Systemsettings and open the category "Input Actions".
  • Right click on the list, select the action "New Group"
  • Right click on the new group, select "New" -> "Global shortcut" -> "Command/URL"
  • The tab Trigger allows to set the keys and the tab action allows you to set a command or URL.

I hope it helps you, Jan.

EDIT: Tried to make it a bit clearer.

Yeah, well... but what command do you have to issue to suspend? And still that doesn't solve the problem with the Fn key.
