You can found useful information in the link proposed by Hans but be cautious, KDE 4 has severe encoding bugs so expect problems in several situations. I recommend you a search in bugs.kde.org. Konsole, Konqueror 3 or other similar tools will be your best friend when you have encoding problems. About input engines, I try practically all available, my system is an openSUSE, and with UIM is the most stable an reliable in KDE 4 for Japanese so, probably, works fine with Chinese.
