Hello everyone,
I installed KDE 4.3.2 from mandriva unofficial RPMs last week. Everything went fine. Before I was using KDE 4.2.4 without experiencing any problem. ![]() Now I found a small problem: when I insert a CD/DVD in the drive nothing happens, no icon in dolphin, no notification, nothing! ![]() Everything works fine with USB disks, the problem is only with CDs and DVDs. I tried with different media, and everything is the same: nothing happens. I tried also using things like the videdvd:/ KIO in dolphin/konqueror with a video DVD in the drive: it doesn't work, and I get a notification saying that there's any DVD in the drive! I know that my system sees the drive because I can mount and umount any CD/DVD using the pmuont/pumount commands in a terminal, and also commands like eject and from cdrkit work fine. The problem seems to be only with KDE. Any idea? Where should I look to get a better understanding of the problem? What can I do to solve it? ![]() gerlos

It is likely that none of the device actions supplied match the disk you are inserting. Is the disc blank or does it already have data present? ( Audio CD's don't work either I think )

I discovered the problem just after I burned a data CD. After burning I inserted it in the drive to test it, but KDE didn't let me mount the drive, so I mounted it using pmount, and the files were there.
I tried also with a couple of others data CDs and with a couple of DVDs that I used before, same problem. So... you say that there could be actions missing? Where should I look to verify this thing? Anyway, I expected that the icon of the disc appeared somewhere (for example in dolphin), even if there wasn't any action configured... I'm wrong? thanks gerlos

The disc should always appear in Dolphin. If it appears there, then it is a case of missing actions. If it does not, then you have a problem with Solid's backend, which is usually HAL.
Device actions are stored in $KDEDIR/share/apps/solid/actions/. $KDEDIR is usually /usr

Thanks for your answer!
I looked there and I found a bunch of actions, so the problem might not be there.
This seems my case: I don't see the disc in Dolphin, while there are actions available where they should be. So there's something wrong in my Solid or in my HAL configuration? Is it possible that the upgrade from KDE 4.2.4 to 4.3.2 "broke" that configuration? I suppose that it could be not so easy to fix... can you point me to some resource I can read to understand the problem? I just don't want to abuse of your kindness. ![]() Thanks a lot |

SOLVED!
![]() It was my fault! ![]() Some time ago I was tinkering around and typed:
I did a diff on a backup of my /etc dir and saw that there was a new file changed in /etc/hal/fdi/information. Looked in my bash history and (re)discovered the cause. I just solved typing:
thanks for your patience and for your suggestions! ![]()
