Hello there,

When I start KDE, the workspace takes too much time to load. I am unable to know why this is so and how to fix it.

After login via KDM, the splash screen appears and the icons blink as expected. The last icon blinks a lot longer and stops for a several seconds, then the splash screen disappears and the whole screen becomes black with only the mouse pointer visible for again several seconds. Then at last i get the workspace.

I have tried to log in through another brand new user account (i.e: with no existing KDE configuration in its home), but still I have the same problem.

In terms of PC configuration, I have 4Gb RAM, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz. I run Slackware Linux 13 and a home compiled KDE 4.3.2.

I wonder where this problem comes from, here is a grep on my X.org.log file, as I have an intuition the problem is related to this:

Code: Select all
grep -e "(EE)\|(WW)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/local" does not exist.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/CID" does not exist.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/local" does not exist.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/CID" does not exist.
(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
(WW) Disabling Mouse0
(WW) Disabling Keyboard0
(WW) RADEON(0): DRI init changed memory map, adjusting ...
(WW) RADEON(0):   MC_FB_LOCATION  was: 0xf7fff000 is: 0xf7fff000
(WW) RADEON(0):   MC_AGP_LOCATION was: 0xffffffc0 is: 0xffffffc0

Thanks,

This is because the KDE splash screen quits before the rest of the desktop has finished starting up, and is completely harmless ( although a touch scary ). If the pause is longer than 3-5 seconds with no HD activity then there is a problem however.

Ok, so how can i reliably monitor the hard-disk activity while KDE loads? My objective is to reduce the time taken for the KDE workspace to load. The time it takes makes me believe that there is something going wrong at the KDE level for I don't get this problem loading XFCE.

If I recall correctly there are some bugs that caused a slow start in KDE 4.3.x. One was fixed recently (can't remember what it was, however).
