OSD for brightness and sound

Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:46 am
Hi,

I just upgraded 2 Laptops to Kubuntu Karmic. Both Thinkpads. The upgrade went well, but I noticed a difference. One of them displays an OSD when I change sound / brightness via the laptop buttons in form of a slider in KDE design. The other does not. The buttons themselves work on both systems perfectly. So does anyone know what I might need to enable that on the other laptop too?

KDE does not feature a brightness OSD by default, even in Trunk, so I cannot help with that unfortuantely.

The Sound OSD is provided by KMix. I cannot find a setting to disable it.

Code: Select all
killall kmix
rm -f $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/kmix*
rm -rf $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/kmix/
kmix &

I don't know what the kubuntu-devs have done to get that brightness OSD part (or why it works on one system and not the other for that matter), but you may want to install kosd. It provides an OSD that, for now, works for brightness and volume. And looks much better than the OSD kmix provides to boot :)

The KMix OSD has been improved for KDE 4.4.
