hello,
i installed openSuSE 11.2 and KDE 4.3.4 on a new system with a brand new HDD. all seemed to go good, but.. after install and updates only twice did i get to the desktop (it stops loading when the 'progress bar' is exactly half way on startup screen) and then, the 2 times i got to desktop, as soon as i tried to do anything, change my desktop from bg img to color.. Locked up! i rebooted and rebooted, even reinstalled 3 or four times, once from the NetInstall (burn CD not DVD iso to boot and install via http/ftp) each time, the same problem. I found that if i use the failsafe mode it works, well almost fine. I went through the options that are in the failsafe mode and used them or removed them one at a time. It boots to the desktop with all but the x11failsafe removed. i've had to add it to the normal boot just to get going. Now this is fine, except something is wrong, right. all seems to work, except that with the x11failsafe opt. my changes to the desktop don't always stay. if i preform a normal shutdown, they mostly stay. if i have to hard re-boot, they do not. normal.. Does anyone know what is being done in the x11failsafe option? I would like to know, so that i can eliminate each item, again one at a time to figure out what is going on. Also on this machine, i can not 'share' folders to my other openSuSE workstations. I can 'map' directories on both of my other openSuSE ws', but they can not 'map' or see shares on this ws. They can however see shares via Samba (SMB://). I've gone through everything, i thought. I do not have firewall running and i am using ifup and not Network Manager, although i did, during the last install choose NM.. I've changed it to ifup in YaST and again, i can see and use all the shares on my home network, but they can not use the ones on this system. p.s,.. NM sucks in Every way! All and all KDE 4.3.4 on openSuSE 11.2 is running smooth, but there are, as to be expected, some glitches. I really need to get past the x11failsafe (again, i've reinstalled completely including partitioning and formating several times) and the inability to 'share' folders! I work from home and work from 3 different spots in my house, my office, the kitchen and the 'smoking room' (garage). I need,, want to be able to keep working on my websites, no matter where in the house i am. Please... I've posted at openSuSE.org about the sharing, unless one of you have had this issue and successfully resolved it. (sysinfo:// intel 2.4 GHz P4, 1GB (tested good) Mem, 160GB HDD (new), 64MB video, (it's a Dell something..)). Thank you in Advance, Landis Спасибо, ЛандисРеед.ком |

I tried to change the video driver, because of the loading with x11failsafe and had no luck.
So... I installed a agp video card which left me booting to a command prompt. Ran: login root: init 3 sax2 -r -m 0=vesa said it was ok to use recomendations init 5 All is well, but does not explain openSuSE or KDE not using the 64 MB intel video. Landis ЛандисРеед.ком |

This sounds more like an X / openSUSE issue, so you may find their forums to be more helpful if you do not get a response.

opensuse 11.2 uses a automatic configuration.
Perhaps you can try to create a manual configuration for your intel video just like you did with the agp card

I needed to do that for my Intel video, or X wouldn't remember my preferred resolution. I could set the resolution to what I want it to be in systemsettings, but next login I was back to 1024x768. Sure, I could put krandr in Autostart to fix that but that solution also brings a rather unwelcome "rescaling" of the desktop upon login.

Could you set the res in boot loader, that seem easier, No, safer than editing x-config...lol Landis. Thanks all, hope to figure out the on-board video (intel i8xx) issue. The AGP video card is too tall to allow me to close the Dell.. lol Landis. ЛандисРеед.ком |
