Missing Screen Lock Dialog Box

Tue Jan 19, 2010 5:09 am
Greetings,

Trying to resolving some small annoyances.

1) I think I lost the graphic of the pop-up dialog box that activates when you wish to re-enter your active session when you lock your session. All that appears when I move my mouse is a blank gray box (looks more like a absence of graphic then a rendered graphic). I find it strange because I think I hadn't encountered this issue previously, but when I went to go test my hibernation it began.

Though I am unable to see my keystrokes I am still able to type in my password and reenter the session.

2) Unrelated with above: Having an issue with getting Kde4 to display my partition scheme under the Hard Disk Usage Monitor Widget. It picks up my physical partitions fine, but does not display my logical partitions under /dev/sda4.

Attached is /etc/fstab info.
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noatime 1 2
/dev/sda2 / jfs noatime 0 1
/dev/sda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/mapper/vol-var /var jfs noatime 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-vartmp /var/tmp ext4 noatime,data=writeback,commit=60,nobarrier 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-tmp /tmp ext4 noatime,data=writeback,commit=60,nobarrier 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-usr /usr jfs noatime 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-portage /usr/portage ext4 noatime,data=writeback,commit=60,nobarrier 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-local /usr/local ext4 noatime,data=writeback,commit=60,nobarrier 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-opt /opt jfs noatime 0 2
/dev/mapper/vol-home /home jfs noatime 0 2

All help is appreciated.

For 1) the blank grey box is likely the password entry dialog. Which graphics card and driver do you use, and which screensaver?

For 2) this is probably because HAL isn't aware of them, and thus Solid isn't either.

1) Intel GMA X4500. Blank screen saver.

Of interest, running compiz as my composite window manager. I've tried resetting session using Kwin but still no change.

2) Do you know how would I get HAL to recognize?

Unfortunately I don't know how to get HAL to recognise them, probably through an FDI file though.
Compiz shouldn't make much of a difference in this case though. Try moving the mouse to wake the system up and force a screen refresh.

To clarify. Issue is not that the dialog box is hangs when the screen saver activates. Rather when I "move" the cursor around to wake the system all that appears is a grey void where the nice kde dialog box should be. No visible details just a grey void (like a missing graphic).

You may be experiencing the same issue as described here: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=85051&start=10#p145440

I can confirm this problem on two separate Fedora 12 installs. My Xeon based work computer has this problem, as does my Duo Core Quad based machine at home. Both have Nvidia cards: A Quadro FX 4600 and a 8500 GT respectively. The commonality between the two is that they are both running the proprietary Nvidia drivers and the problem started when I upgraded both machines to KDE 4.3.85 through the kde-redhat rpm repositories. The problem has continued through 4.4 RC2. The symptoms are identical to those described in the previous posts. Until I saw this thread, I was thinking that this was a unique KDE on Fedora problem.

Can someone please file a bug at bugs.kde.org? This is quite a bad regression.

I've recently changed over to x86_64 Fedora, with a new GPU. I'm still having the problem. I've found that it is related to running the openGL version of cairo-dock (glx-dock). If I start glx-dock I immediately start having the problem. Killing glx-dock and its related processes doesn't fix the problem. I have to restart the machine. Non-openGL cairo-dock doesn't cause any problems. I'm going to investigate the root cause of this when I have the time. I'll file a bug report with the cairo-dock people, once I brush up on my French.

Other OpenGL applications likely interfere with and possible corrupt KWin's state with the Graphics card. This is a Linux architectural issue due to be solved with DRI2.

If you need to use the OpenGL version of Cairo Dock, please disable desktop effects.

FYI, I just took an update to the latest Cairo Dock build off of their weekly ppa for the 2.3 branch.

(I was previously on the 2.3 branch as well, but they released an update)

I was having this issue before, and am no longer having the issue.

However, I also took several other updated, that included kernal and xorg updates. So it is possible it was some other update that resolved this.

But do try the latest PPA for Cairo Dock, and it might solve your problem as well.

Hi IMak,

I'm under gentoo with kde 4.4.5 and I'm having the same issue with my ATI Radeon HD 5850, with fglrx. Did you find some solution for this issue?

Thank you very much for any kind of help.
