Hi. I recently installed Gentoo Linux on my laptop (Intel Yonah processor) and while I have worked out most of the problems I had initially, there is one problem that I cannot seem to permanently resolve. After booting and logging in via KDM, I am able to start programs for 5 to 10 seconds, after which point KDE will stop launching programs. Relogging will allow KDE to start programs without an issue until the next reboot.
When this happens, assuming that I managed to get the console open in time, attempting to run stuff from the console has one of two messages pop-up:
I had KDE 4.3.3 installed and upgraded to KDE 4.3.4, but it did not help resolve the issue. I asked about how to fix on the Gentoo forums, but they weren't sure what was wrong. I have tried googling it, but I haven't been able to find anyone having this problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? |

Check the existance and integrity of the ~/.Xauthority file, as well as the utilities ( xauth ) that manage it.

I have deleted ~/.Xauthority and it has made no difference. Is there a list of utilities that should I check?

Can you please post the contents of ~/.xsession-errors after failing to login?

I just tried changing my xorg.conf settings to fix this and while it did not work, I was able to get more informative errors from xsession-errors:

Are you using a boot splash and/or parallel boot? My Plasma desktop fails to start some times on first login after boot.
connect(post, SIGNAL(readSignature()), qapp, SLOT(quit()));

Yes, I have a parallel boot configured in rc.conf:

I just tried setting rc_parallel to "NO" and rebooting, but I had the same issue occur. It also did not seem to slow down the boot process.

This issue is related to something unset'ing $DISPLAY likely.
Check your login scripts. Do Plasma and KRunner ( Alt + F2 ) work?

They do not work when I have this issue. Relogging works around it. In the terminal, which I managed to open before programs stopped launching, it seems that display is not being reset:
What scripts should I check, as this issue only appears on the first login via KDM I make and relogging via KDM resolves it. :/ |

That is extremely unusual.
Can you please check that the files ~/.X* are owned by your user and primary group?

I have been doing more troubleshooting with some help from the Gentoo forums, where I asked for advice on the scripts. Here is .xsession-errors from a first login, where things fail:
Here is .xessions-errors from a relogin, where things work:
In the login where things did not work, I was able to load firefox and konsole before KDE would stop launching applications. Between those points in time, there is a single line:
It is not present in the .xsession-errors log for the session that I obtained after relogging, so I suspect it is the culprit, but I have no idea how to proceed based on that assumption. I cannot find out both how it is being launched and how its launch differs on my system from a system where KDE just works. |

I just upgraded to KDE 4.4.0 and this problem still remains. :/

It appears that your computers hostname is being changed either by DHCP, or is being set after KDM is started.
