When I click on a url in an email, the already-open instance of Firefox is invoked (as expected) but Firefox immediately jumps to the current desktop. I find this incredibly annoying! If I wanted it on the current desktop that's where I would have put it in the first place!
I am hoping there is some way to "pin down" applications so they don't jump from one desktop to another. I messed around with some of the options in the "Window Behavior" dialog but could not find a way to get Firefox to stay put. Actually, I tried dozens of different option combinations and none of them affected this behavior. Does anyone have an answer to this? Thanks! |

i don't think this can be changed.
alltough odd to you, i think the desktop behaves as a user would expect: it brings the activity to the desktop dat you currently work on. If it didn't, the user would probably continue to click on the url, because he doesn't see any response..

Thanks for the reply. I kind of expect that to be the answer as I Googled and found complaints but no answers. One of the biggest things I like about Linux is the ability to have multiple desktops. Since I am often engaged in several activities at once I like to organize things by desktop. KDE's habit of moving things around without permission is like the wind blowing in and messing up my papers every time someone opens the office door! I stuck with KDE 3.0 for a very long time to avoid this behavior, thinking it was a bug that would eventually get fixed. Is there a formal way to ask for a new feature? Something like "pin to desktop". |

Does this happen with other applications? As far as I know, this is a Firefox-specific issue. For me the windows stays on the same virtual desktop, but Firefox switches to that desktop automatically when it's activated.

Good point! Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. |

well, i tried this with konqueror and it opens a new window on the current desktop, in stead of a new tab on the other virtual desktop
