Shut Down App or Shut Down Button?

Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:50 pm
Hi there, can anyone please help? I cant seem to find a shut down button in KDE4. In the application launcher under "leave" I can do logout, lock, switch sleep, or hibernate. Why no power off or shut down? Can I add it?

Thanks for any advice. :)

Sounds like you don't have permission to shutdown. Do you know which login manager you use? (Usually GDM (default in Ubuntu) or KDM).

Yes, its GDM and now that Im using KDE, its annoying to have to log out, then shut down in Ubuntu.

I haven't used GDM in a long time, but my search results seem to suggest that it isn't possible to shutdown from KDE Plasma Desktop if you use [a recent version of] GDM, see this topic for example.

Two possible workarounds:

1. Set your login manager to KDM.
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

2. Shutdown from a terminal.
Code: Select all
sudo shutdown -h now

(or -r to restart).

Great, many thanks. This also answered my next question how to boot up into KDM.
