[SOLVED] black screen with 4.4

Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:18 am
I have updated to kde 4.4 on my kubuntu 9.10. It worked fine but after a few reboots I now have a black screen after the end of kde load. I have a mouse, pressing Alt+F2 allows me to launch konqueror and write this lessage. I can see that kopete as been connected t my account with a popup message, but NO DESKTOP AT ALL ! Please help me to solve this.

I have already tried to rename ~/.kde ton another folder but it doesn't help. My computer isn't usable anymore !! It's the first the time a KDE update broke my compter !!

Thanks

Please run Konsole.

Then type in:

Code: Select all
pidof plasma-desktop

If it returns something like "9456" then run:

Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop

In either case, then run

Code: Select all
plasma-desktop

And paste the output from that command here.

I noticed I had a bunch of updates there were not downloading for some reason. Im able to finish the remainder of those updates using Ubuntu Tweak. I will let you know how that goes.

"Plasma-desktop" amongst other workspace and plasma downloads are being updated thanks to Ubuntu Tweak. Hopefully that fixes my prob. Now those 40+ updates I couldnt update the normal way, are installing. I'll come back again (fingers crossed) with good news.

PROBLEM FIXED. At least for me. I can see my desktop again finally and all is back to normal. I had some updates that would not update for some reason. Ubuntu Tweak allowed me to finish all of those downloads.

In the regular software update screen, some of the updates I needed were grayed out and not being updated.

You can get the Ubuntu Tweak DEB file here...

http://ubuntu-tweak.com/

Then, once installed, go into Ubuntu Tweak and do the updates available in "update manager". Thats what worked for me. Hopefully a mod will come around here with the proper terminal commands so the rest of you wont need to download U-Tweak.

Tweak just crashed on me. Any other way to get my desktop back?

So Im guessing you are able to get into some desktop and are able to do ALT+F2 to type in programs like firefox, konsole, etc

Man, the only thing I can think of is to force the updates somehow. Find a command to force those updates. Unfortunately, I never write any of the useful commands down! When I am stuck, I usually just do a google search to get the info or commands I need.

Hopefully a mod chimes in soon. Good luck.

Yes, thankfully I remembered the Alt+f2 trick from an earlier How-To. I'd just like to go back to 4.3 at this point. But there's no good way to do that.

Code: Select all
sudo install plasma-desktop

This at least got me... something. I have to switch to tty (Alt+Ctrl+F2), then back to the desktop (Alt+Ctrl+F7) to get anything. Even then, my desktop folder is on both of my screens and my widgets don't work right.

Will someone kindly point me in the direction of the archived 4.3 desktop?

Hi,

You not alone. :-/ I have the same problem (no login / black screen)

I haver read somewhere that Ubuntu Tweak isnt a KDE application.

What should I do / select with Ubuntu Tweak.
