Hello, everyone.

Yesterday I updated my Chakra linux to KDE 4.4.
Unfortunately, now i'm not able to start X or KDM.
I have some clues about some libraries that may be the cause of the problem,
but its just a guess.

Anyway, the problem happens when trying to load KDM. The mouse cursos appears in the screen, but suddenly goes to the console login. I tryed to start X and it shows the following:

*The mouse cursor appears on the screen.
*It shows in the screen a dialog saying "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation."
*When I click in the okay button of the dialog, the console have the following information:

Code: Select all
FATAL: Module fbcon not found.
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning:            Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols.
>                     Ignoring extra symbols.
Errors from xkbcom are not fatal to the X server
ksplashx: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such  file or directory
Agent pid: 3679
startkde: Starting up...
/usr/bin/kdeinit4: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such  file or directory
startkde: Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.

waiting for X server to shut down

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/chicao/.Xauthority

I search the libpng in my system and find the following libraries:

Code: Select all
#locate libpng
/usr/lib/libpng.a
/usr/lib/libpng.so
/usr/lib/libpng14.a
/usr/lib/libpng14.so
/usr/lib/libpng14.so.14
/usr/lib/libpng14.so.14.0.0
/usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng.pc
/usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng14.pc

Anyone have some idea what it could be the reason of this problem and
how to fix it?

I would appreciate a help.

Hm, which mirror do you use? Are you sure you updated to 4.4? And when did you update libpng/libjpeg?

As a temporary workaround: http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic ... 041#p14041

Hello hans!
Thanks for the answer.

Well, mostly packages of kde-mod of the update was with the 4.4 version signature, so i think my update was for the kde 4.4. Please, correct me if i'm wrong.

And about the libpng and libjpeg, i'm pretty sure that it was updated along the other packages.

Anyway, i'll try to make some thinks using the workaround you posted.

Thanks again.

Well, i installed libpng12 from AUR and my problem is solved.
But I still wonder why this problem appeared.
My kde version is a 4.4 rc 2:

Code: Select all
$kded4 --version
Qt: 4.6.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.3.95 (KDE 4.3.95 (KDE 4.4 RC2))

I thought that updating the packages would upgrade my kde to the 4.4 stable release.
It seems that I was wrong.
Anyway, I will try to upgrade again.
Thanks for the help.

The problem was probably that your KDE packages weren't built against the new versions of libpng. You might want to change your mirror if it doesn't have the stable packages yet.

By the way, changed to the correct way of marking topics as solved. :)
